Free (Kobo) - A Slice of Murder by Chris Cavender [Cozy Mystery]

A Slice of Murder (Pizza Lovers #1) by Chris Cavender from publisher Kensington

Quote:
Not too much happens in the sleepy little town of Timber Ridge, North Carolina--which is fine with pizza-purveyor extraordinaire Eleanor Swift. The spunky owner of A Slice of Delight is trying to mend her broken heart and could use a little quiet time. But when a late night delivery customer turns up dead, she's in for just the opposite in this delicious mystery series debut, featuring pizza as the prima character . . .

Awesome, thanks! It's great to see more publisher freebies in the (slightly) smaller venues, and I'm hoping that some of the smaller imprints start distributing to multiple stores again to get their free books to as many readers as possible.

Can someone explain the term Cozy mystery? I've heard the term several times, but its exact nature is still elusive to me. Are the detectives all women? Are they all set in little towns with cute names? I THINK it has something to do with the detective and a strong sense of place, I mean certain John Sandford novels (outside the Lucas Davenport novels) would qualify as a Cozy mystery with that definition (Or some James Lee Burke novels!), but I don't think anyone means THEIR work!

According to Wikipedia:

"Cozy mysteries, also referred to simply as "cozies," are a subgenre of crime fiction in which sex and violence are downplayed or treated humorously, and the crime and detection take place in a small, socially intimate community. The term was first coined in the late 20th century when various writers produced work in an attempt to re-create the Golden Age of Detective Fiction.
..."

A good example would be the old Murder She Wrote television show.

Hmmm! thanks

I'm a fan of the Brother Cadfael mysteries. So by your definition, they are Cozies. These things have been written all along, the only thing that is new is the name.

Hmmm. I love the Brother Cadfael mysteries too. Somehow, the more modern "cozies" are a LOT lighter than Bro Cadfael. They each have a theme -- garage saling, cake baking, running a delicatessen, etc. And they tend to be very chatty.
