Page navigation panel won't appear

This issue just appeared on my reader yesterday. The page navigation panel will not appear when I tap and hold on the page number at the bottom of the screen. The reader did crash a short time before when I used the dictionary. I got a "force exit?" or "force close?" message. I don't remember which. Either way, I touched "OK" and I think it took me back to the home page screen. I did a soft reset after that to clear whatever may have been the issue. Later, when I wanted to see how many more pages I had to read to finish chapter the page navigation panel would not appear so I could view the table of contents.

I did the latest update today and it still isn't working. Pages will turn (button or swipe) and the dictionary is working. It doesn't matter what book I open. The page navigation won't appear for any of them.

Anyone else had this issue? Thoughts? Solutions?

Ughhhh!!! Never mind. Embarrassed to say that I have been touching the screen incorrectly. I went to Sony's website to read the User Manual and saw instruction are to "tap" the screen, not "tap and hold" as I had been doing. I just merely forgot the proper "tap" since the last time I did it.

Crawling under a rock now. (place embarrassed emoticon here)

Try cleaning around the screen bezel.

I find it doesn't always respond to my finger but is much more reliable using the stylus, probably because the sensitive area is so close to the bottom of the page. However I find it easier to us the menu button to get to page navigation.

I probably should have mentioned that I did use some canned air to blow any dust away from the perimeter. I followed up with some more cleaning per your suggestion with a microfiber cloth dry and damp with screen cleaner. No change.

It does not respond with the stylus either. Thank you for the tip to navigate pages with the menu button. I had not ventured to find an alternative solution hoping there might be a fix for the touch screen. I suppose that will have to do for now. Still stumps me why that feature has suddenly stopped working. Maybe another bug for Sony to sort out?

Is there a central spot to go to for reporting reader issues with Sony or is that simply done via their email on their website homepage?

Have you tried the hard reset. Instructions are in sticky at top of this subforum.

My PRS T1

my Aluratek gave up the ghost (after I sat on it,is this a bug? lol) so now I have a Sony PRS T!(not my choice-gift) - after 4 weeks I am generally ok with it apart from the odd crash when adding a lot of books, I have 800 plus added as of now. and some "freezes" requiring power-off/reset the reader software requires work, beats me why functions such as renaming files was not included considering it is basically an android/linux device and there is a vg library of basic file management functions available,,, apart from that the device works as advertised the wi-fi is fine, the battery seems to last as advertised, the screen is easy to read ,navigation is ok I use the hardware buttons to page not the silly screen swipe(who thought THAT was a good idea?. The PC Reader software is (possibly) the worst pos I have come across in many years I only use it to keep my firmware updated and it does that well, otherwise I use Caliber or just windoze explorer to add books to the device, I dunno why Sony always seems to have problems with software. It's a FILE MANAGEMENT system kinda basic... one would think

Have not done that yet. My understanding is that is wipes everything off the reader. I do not have any books loaded on the reader except what I have checked out from the public library. My only concern is the user guide preloaded on the reader. Will that stay on the reader?

I have edited my original post to say that I have been tapping the screen incorrectly. I am still fairly new to the PRS-T1 and merely forgot since the last time I used the touch screen for page navigation that I am to "tap" and not "tap and hold". Operator error.

Thanks to all of you for your assistance!

Glad it is solved.

In case of future problems. I have hard reset my Sony 600 and lost nothing. Not sure about T1, haven't had to as yet. I think the biggest problem is that you may have to reauthorize it with Adobe.

You can copy all of your files to your computer using calibre or your system OS.
And the user guide can be downloaded from Sony and put back on if necessary.
Library books can be downloaded again as well if they haven't expired.

I would like to recommend that you get calibre and become familiar with it before your collection becomes too large. It is wonderful and supported by voluntary donations. You only pay if you want to. Great support whether you donate or not.

Reauthorizing with Adobe was another of my concerns about doing a hard reset. In the process of trying to change an email address and password things got a bit balled up and the online "help" was of little help. I never received the email they said they would send to reset everything. I haven't tried logging into Adobe since then. I don't know what they have on file now. Come to think of it, maybe a hard reset is what I need to do to start the process over again?
