Free (Kindle Canada) Nicolas Slonimsky: Writings on Music [Academic Essays]
Nicolas Slonimsky: Writings on Music: Early Writings: 1 by Nicolas Slonimsky and edited by Elektra Yourke is just what it says in the title, courtesy of publisher Routledge, which does rather nice academic and language-learning books, a number of which I already own.
This, I strongly suspect to be a totally inadvertent glitch freebie, but it is available @ Amazon to Canadians (other countries may also be valid, but this is not available at all to the US or UK when I checked), so enjoy it while it lasts. Routledge also appear to have a decent number of nice-looking discounted academic e-books under $10, which you can find via koland's link in the other thread which led me to this particular one. I will be browsing their offers to see if there's anything that looks promising in there, as Routledge's paper books are normally $40+ CAD minimum and if there's something interesting enough and the e-book version isn't messed up, then it will be a very good discount savings off the regular price of something that I might normally get from the library. Description Nicolas Slonimsky (1894-1995) was an influential and celebrated writer on music. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1894, in his 101 years he taught and coached music; conducted the premieres of several 20th century masterpieces; composed works for piano and voice; and oversaw the 5th-8th editions of the classic "Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians." Beginning in 1926, Slonimsky resided in the United States. From his arrival, he wrote provocative articles on contemporary music and musicians, many of whom were his personal friends. Working as a freelance author, he built a large file of reviews, articles, and even manuscripts for books that were never published. This is the first volume of a 4 volume collection on the best of this material. |

For Routledge, a lot of their books don't seem to qualify as textbooks (at least, not for the promo). They have a lot more under $40, just in the Kindle store.

A lot of social dysfunction analysis and plain old self-help guides in there, but also some nice-looking history and culture things as well.
Thanks! (Hee. I recognize some titles I already own in paper. And paid less for on sale.) |

OMG What a great find! Slonimsky had a wickedly sly sense of humour and peppered his academic writings with it. Thanks!
