Ready to go "E"
The last trip we took required a huge negotiated settlement on what books we would take. For 18 days we managed on 9 books, which none of us had read and all were interested in.
We managed ok, with me in the front setting the pace, the Daughter nipping at my bookmarks and the Spouse bringing up a slightly slower but respectable third place. I had to buy a book at Heathrow to get me thru the flight home, but it didn't count against our baggage allowance so that was ok. Obviously the days of packing a stack of books, for each of us, is gone the way of the parchment scroll, never to return. Baggage weight limits have become a permanent part of our travel landscape. So for Christmas this year we all got readers of some sort, and my folks got them as well. My folks got basic Kindles. I managed to figure out the setup of the Kindles before they were unwrapped on Christmas morning, even linking their accounts up so they were already to go, with a few books already loaded, when they opened them and turned them on. My Dad has been unable to read with any comfort for a number of years now. Since Christmas he has been reading non stop. This has been a huge blessing for a man who has been an avid reader his whole life. Compromised eyesight had taken one of his favorite pastimes and made it into a chore instead of a pleasure. He had resisted any suggestion of an ereader, but once he had it in hand, an appealing book open to read, in a font large enough to be read easily with no strain on his eyes, he was a convert! I got a nifty versatile Le Pan tablet, a bit heavy, but it will do lots of handy stuff while traveling, like show maps at a large enough size to help us find that bookstore with the yellow sign in the Latin quarter... The Spouse and Daughter have 7" Pandigital readers. The Pandigitals seem pretty straight forward. The Daughter has already downloaded her books for this semester and is totally delighted to be able to read her fan fiction favs as well. The Spouse is a bit less motivated, but sees that for travel in particular they will be great. I am struggling a little bit with learning android and setting up my tablet, but I love it already and am sure it is going to be great once I have it set up to suit me! So next summer, when we are traveling in Alaska for 9 days? We can bring all the books we want, and we only have to share if we want to ; -) Last edited by sarafina; 01-22-2012 at 06:14 PM. |
