PE reader screen won't respond
I am trying to update another PE. this is my 3rd update on a 3rd machine but this time something went wrong. everything was fine and great, updating to ermine and allmine and gapps and everything, until i tried to remove my gmail account after testing to make sure it work. there was no way to do that except to do a factory reset. i did not know what it would do but thought that the worst would be that i would have to redo everything. so no problem. but then there was a problem. after the reboot my i was still with ermine, which i was pleased with but i noticed that i wasn't asked to register either. then i noticed reader screen would not initialize in order to calibrate it and so i skipped it planning to do it later. after the PE setup then i was met with the Nexus One setup. i skipped that too and thought if i needed to i could come back. so my PE was set up and all seemed to be well, even market worked, until i tried to do anything with the reader. the boot-u seemed to go well and after i skipped the calibration screen it initialized, at least that what it looks like. it has that Read, Write, Surf stuff on the page. however, as i said, nothing works on it. it will open no books (in fact when i tap on the reader icon nothing happens) will not open a journal page, and my library freezes too. i have spent about eight hours trying to find an answer and working with it my self to no avail. i downgraded to dingo, which went well, but did not fix the problem. then i tried upgrading to ermine again using PEONLYGoldenAllmineErmineRC3.zip but that would not install. i held menu/rotate down for 10 minutes for at least 3 times and it never worked. so i finally let it reboot as search for possible answers and start this thread. i type slow and am also watching the PE so it has been about 1+ hrs. and within that time it has restarted on its own at least 4 times. one thing i noticed when i decided to leave it and search was that the SD card was not mounted. the message at the top of the screen was "preparing SD card" but then the ongoing process was (is, at the moment) "checking for errors". and another thing it started up in safety mode for a few restarts but is no longer on/in safety mode. it is still restarting periodically and before it does the screen goes black for a bit and then it restarts. after about an hour and a half the library was no longer frozen but the reader still is not working yet there is a change. now the reader screen has the first calibration screen up, but that is a far as it gets. it is still rebooting every no and again. anyone have any ideas or can tell me a little about what is happening? thanks

Hi,
I have no idea about the readerscreen. But I had the same problem with my SD card. I took another one and it works. Cheers, Yivi |

Did you read the instructions inside the Golden Allmine zipfile? You need to unzip that first and read the instructions, not just rename it "update.zip". That's usually the reason why you won't get to the "Updating software" screen.
If, after making sure the right file is on the media (BTW, I had better success with a MicroSD card rather than USB, but YMMV) you still don't get to the "Updating software" screen when booting with Menu+Rotate held, then you probably have more serious problems which will require serial access. |

ok so the i did the update and everything went fine. but there is one difference. the instructions say to wait and calibrate the reader screen first. however after initializing it just went to the entourage edge tm screen, and on the tablet side is the back-up option. i did the finish thing on the tablet side and then the screen went blank black except for the bar at the top

i think the problem is that i am not able to calibrate the screen. just for fun i went to the registration screen to see what would happen. the screen came up but then a pop up appeared that said "have you calibrated the screen yet" with the options buttons to "check again" or "exit". the only thing "check again" would do was blink the screen and the of course the "exit" would exit. everything else seems to work on the reader side though. well, what i mean by everything is that it still initializes, after a long time, the screen changes in relation to the state of the device. i.e. when it is off then there is the device schematics and the note to slide the power button, when it is in hibernation the hibernating screen is on, and when it is on i get the edge tm screen. the reader even rotatles 180` for right or left handers.
the calibration option under settings->display->reader screen calibrator doe nothing and i was never given the chance or option to calibrate this time. my library freezes and i have to force quit most of the time and the reader does nothing. once i got a screen that said "Active ReaderService (in application ReaderService) is not responding". that was on a black screen o the tablet side. then for a bit the reader screen went black too but came back after a reboot but no more than what i had after my original factory reset. |

You have some strange things going on, davidsjahn! I wish I could help, but you've already tried the few tricks I know.

Are you sure that the update worked? Reading your description it sounds as if it might not have.

i have upgraded, downgraded, and factory reset about 3-4 times each so I know that is not the problem. I have done the up grade with many different copies and have done the down grade on each of those so that is not it. something is keeping the reader from properly initializing. i wonder it the code could have gotten jacked some how when i did the first factory reset when this problem started?

Have you tried the original Dingo OS 1.13? This is not an upgrade OR a downgrade. It is a complete reformat of the Pocket Edge. http://www.ethanphoenix.com/entourag...ate.golden.zip Last edited by obsessed2; 01-12-2012 at 12:07 PM. |

If obsessed2's advice doesn't work then it is out with the serial cable and check for dead memory cells the hard way.

That's weird, and I've never heard that before. After installing the Golden Allmine, you can check the update.log file in the upgrade media, that might offer some information (although my guess is that there is something fishy going on with the e-reader).

is there anything specific that i need to be looking for in the update log? i really don't know what should be there and what shouldn't, of how it should look.
