Simple Things

...or at least they should be!

I have a Pocketbook IQ701 running 2.0.3, seems to be standard install to which I've added Dolphin browser, Maildroid, Aldiko, FB Reader and ES File Explorer.

It's got 268 books in the standard onboard library, which I assume accounts for a large part of the 2gb usage? Whatever, I have about 18mb of free space on the device (7.3gb free on the 8gb SD card).

I want to 'move' all the books onto the SD card - this is a temporary measure so I can free up some space and attempt a 2.0.6 upgrade. However, I cannot copy the files to the SD card - I go into the file manager and select the 'books' directory, copy it, and then navigate to the SD card...but it just says 'could not move folder'. As I'm on a Mac, nor can I move them by USB connection as the PB doesn't mount as a mass storage device.

What to do?

Ultimately, what I want to do is:

1. Ditch the PB home screen and have my PB open to an Android Screen
2. Ditch most of the PB reader stuff (which I see as pretty ropey anyway)
3. Have one operating system running on the PBs internal memory - have all apps on this internal memory (NOT on SD card)
4. Have all books on the SD card (and NOT internal to the device)

Don't know what the best path to achieving this is, anyone any ideas? Obviously first I need to be able to get books and other superfluous stuff off the device!!

Thx in advance!

Hi,
if (and that should be so) your device is rooted have a look around and find the app "Root Explorer", that will solve your problem.

There are several threads about tweaking your IQ to be a usable toy, just look.
For 2.0.6 you'll find a patch to install market, root it and then you are able to install e.g. Launcher Pro, Titanium Backup (enables you to uninstall PB stuff and backup the rest), giving you more space on internal and so on..

There is also the possibility to try PDN SH-ROM, a port from Icewyng, but this is still pretty, working most of the time but not flawless.

Hi troll, thanks for the tips...although not sure what you mean by some of them! Is my device 'rooted'...? No idea! What is rooting and how would I know if I'm rooted or not? And if it wasn't how would I 'root' it?

You mention a 2.0.6 'patch'...which presumably is a step beyond installing 2.0.6. But as I understand it if I upgrade to 2.0.6 without first backing up my files, I'll lose all my apps and data (books) ? So I'm trying to find some way to back them up BEFORE I do any upgrading.

I've read quite a few of the threads on turning IQ into a useful tool, but a lot of it is over my head - think drowning not waving

OK, I found a thread about how to root the IQ

On page 4 of the thread (I did read it right through!) there's a link to a 'repack' which appears to do a little more than just root the device, and also makes the rooting easier I think. Is it safe to use this? (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...ketbook&page=4)

As mentioned earlier I can't backup my books until, as you suggest, I'm rooted. Will this 'repack' installation delete all my books or retain them? I just don't want to do it if it's going to burn all my books!

Thx

All these patches and repacks require a new flashing, so unfortunately your books will most probably be lost.
As I see it there are two possibilities: either you get the IQ hooked up to you computer (or someone elses) by using PDA NET and save your books that way,
or you try to get "Z4ROOT", an app that allows you to root your IQ (i.e. gaining administrator rights to see all parts of the operating system and change values there iso only seeing most parts without real access) thereafter you can copy and paste nearly everything by using "RootExplorer"

If you have read the whole thread about the repack you might have found my uploads to get all you need, if you require more help PM me

Hi troll, thanks for the reply - you may well be getting a PM

What is 'flashing'..? And how does it differ from 'rooting'?
