A wish for Calibre

I use Calibre a lot and love it.
Is it possible to have a feature where I could simply right click a book and 'send' it to be translated from Mobi to Epub. This is within file folders not in Calibre
Yes I'm lazy.

That would be an specific OS feature: Context Menu (item)

You could write your own (registry entry in Windows) calling the Calibre convert CLI.

But that brings the question: What are you doing messing under Calibre's skirts (there is a sticky on that somewhere)? You should not leave other files in the library. Other, being files that did not enter Calibre via any of the approved ways.

While none of us want to mess beneath Calibre's skirts, it's not clear that that is what Dusty's proposing here.

I read this as more about triggering Calibre from anywhere in the computer's file system to convert a Mobi to an ePub, i.e. adding a facility the way you indicate via the registry.

This could trivially be done with a shell extension that invoked the "ebook-convert" command-line tool.

If you convert a book via the CLI, it is not automatically added to the Library. That is another step. That was my point that indiscriminate messing can mess things up Even if you use Calibre tools to do so.

The OP's desire, though, if I understand him correctly, is to simply right click on a book in an arbitrary book in Windows Explorer, and have it converted, with the converted book being placed in the same folder. That could safely by done with a shell extension that invoked "ebook-convert".

Yes that is precisely what I would like.
Quite often I simply want to convert a book to pass on to a friend.

One idea could be to configure him as an eMail recipient in Preferences | Sharing books by eMail.

Add his eMail address and the desired format; then when you select the "connect/share" menu on a book, you will have the ability to eMail your friend the book, and an automatic conversion to the format he needs will happen.
