Hi everyone,
I have a question for the PRS-T1 holders. I am a scientist and I read quite few publication in pdf per month and in order to save paper I thought e-readers might be a solution. My question now, could you do a quick video of the reading of a classical 3 column science paper ? Tweaking size font to read more easily etc. Just to see if the page splitting option is good enough for long term reading and specially focusing on the fact that when you turn pages you might loose the what was I in. I have uploaded a paper and I am very interested in page 2 and 3 with have in columns images with prevent any reflow to be an efficient method. Thank you very much ![]() enzo. PS: I have seen few youtube video showing a bit of that but that doesn't help that much, I really would like to be sure, I can read for extnded time, so that this e-reader will be good enough, because I bought a kindle before which didn't help and broke in less than 6 month... Please ask Sony questions in the Sony forum. That is why we have different forums.
Thank you. |

I suspect the answer's going to be that no e-ink device is currently that good for reading PDFs. I'd look at devices with more traditional screens, e.g. iPads. |

Ah
![]() I had a short look at the PDF in question. It looked quite legible in the T1's landscape 'fit width' mode, and the page buttons seemed to work OK although paging was slow. The font in the figure labels didn't look great, and I couldn't be sure but it looked like some characters were rendered as spaces. That could be a major problem. I'd still want to try it on an iPad instead - a bigger colour screen and more CPU power should improve the rendering. I'm not really able to take a video of the T1 reading the document, I'm afraid ![]() |

I was interested in your question because my son (also a scientist) was considering getting a sony T1 ereader for reading articles. My reader, which has some problems with freezing and other stuff, was absolute crap at reading the pdf you uploaded. Using landscape mode and swiping or button for page turn meant a wait of between 3-12 seconds for the next page to appear. Some page turns were even longer more than several minutes up to about 5 min. I couldn't even get to the page with figures, just too frustrating waiting for the next section to load. My T1 is good reading epubs but not good at pdfs. I had one pdf book but my T1 would only display blank pages.
But, as I said my T1 has problems; however some people seem to have no problems with theirs. I won't be recommending a T1 to my son...You just don't know if you will buy a good T1 or a problem T1. |

No 6" eInk device is good for PDFs. The ideal PDF reader is a tablet - an iPad or a similar=-size Android tablet.

Thank you to your responses !!
![]() (And sorry for the forum's misorganisation stuff..., you should see my house...) In fact there are three major problems with tablets : their volume, their price and the fact that in Paris, where I do live, you can't take it out of your pocket to read if you want to continue using the arm you were holding it with ^^. Oh, and eye stain witch prevent me to read correctly for more than 2 hours on my laptop... I thought maybe kindle fire could be a response but eye stain would still be an issue I suppose. Dear Chrisridd, as you might have noticed the interesting part of the pdf are the first page where the titles and authors are displayed in two column/three and the second page which as a figure organised in the same manner. Would you find it doable to read them ? For example exiting the column splitting and zooming it with the apple swipe fingers thing ? When you say it takes time to turn pages, would you say it is long enough to be a pain ? With this reader would you read pdf files like this one twice or three times a day ? Which would represent 2 or 3 hours reading (reading + documentation...). Could you try the pdf I added (which are a book and a powerpoint transformed in pdf this time, in french my bad ^^). Could you take screenshots ? I you find the video to time consuming ? (if it is possible, anyway...) And a question to everyone what would you think about these cheap tablets: here? Do it worth it ? What would you think of eye stain ? Should I rather hack the T1 device ? |

PRS-T1 Notepad
Just new to the Sony Reader and after only a week I noticed that I have over 17000 "notes" stored up...they seem to be "duplicate" bookmarks. When I try to delete "all" notes it only does about 12-15 at a time before shutting down. Suggestions???

PRS-T1 Sync
It could be related to my earlier query about the 17000 entries in my Notes, but when I connect computer and reader and try to do a SYNC...using "Select All" which includes 12 books and 5 notes...the Sync progress seems to stall out at "2 of 17" where it can hang for several hours. More suggestions?

I have think about it and there are several reasons why bigger ereaders are an issue :
- They are more expensive - They don't fit in a pocket, and I am working in a lab with chemicals, in the pocket the device is safer than on a table with all the stuff. - In the bus or the metro in Paris it will be stolen in a few days. Actually I am quite nervous about the last issue with the kindle fire because of the glossy and "high tech" design wich might inspire jealousy (even if it is not that expensive). I am especially worried about the "multimedia" capabilities, ereader are not attractive for non "professional" thieves (most of them don't read if they even know how) but looking videos is clearly an aspect that can make them think about it. I am not earning a lot of money because I am a student and replacing the device is not an option. But I didn't find any other 6 to 7 inches alternative yet. So I am getting it. And I found the kindle ereader very fragile and the kindle fire seems, as many android tablets do, to be more stiffer. I just hope eye stain won't be an issue for me... @Speckbo : Maybe you should have open a new topic, don't you think ? |
