Greek in Mobi

I was writing a text on MS Word and using Mobipocket Creator to convert *.doc files to *.mobi files and keep it on my Kindle. There are some greek words and the Kindle do not show them, neither Mobipocket Reader on PC. How can I insert greek words in a MS Word documents that will be converted to *.mobi format?

I bet it's a problem with the default Kindle font. Any other reader where you can change the font would probably display the Greek correctly once you choose a font that includes Greek characters.

The problem is usually in the encoding, not the font. Kindle supports Greek characters, but the encoding has to be such that it can properly recognize the characters. Word is probably not the best thing to use for a document to be converted. I couldn't find any way to specify UTF-8 for a Word doc, but I have an older version of Word. I could find how to save in UTF-8 as text only, though, in the Word help info. It might be worth a try, to see if the text file converts properly, once it is in UTF-8. Make sure that Mobipocket Creator knows you are using UTF-8. There is a select list on one of the screens for that.

If you only have a small number of Greek fragments in an otherwise English book, one solution is to include them as images. I've done this with a number of books.

Personally, I start from a document format (doc or odt) and I save it in HTML format before using Mobipocket Creator. The greek letters are saved in the HTML "α" mode.

If you use polytonic greek letters, that would be not enough, and you will have to open the HTML file in Notepad and save it with the UTF-8 encoding before uploading it to Mobipocket creator.

The resulting HTML UTF-8 file can be uploaded to Mobipocket and/or edited to obtain your desired formatting.
