Calling all NEW Scifi, Horror and Fantasy authors

Hi all, I'm quite interested in reading books of the Scifi, Fantasy and Horror genre. But I would quite like to read work by new authors just starting out, I don't mind if you're not published yet. Not so interested in High fantasy, more low fantasy. Also with scifi more the hard scifi rather than Scifi/fantasy. As to horror, don't really mind, I've read a lot of zombie and apocalypse books lately and I've enjoyed them a lot. Anyway thanks in advance if you're interested. |

Can someone please explain the difference between "High Fantasy" and "Low Fantasy"? I'm guessing we're talking LoTR vs [insert Urban Fantasy title here]??

High Fantasy is lots of powerful magic, sweeping epic stories and so on. The Silmarillion is an example of High magic. Low fantasy is more gritty down to earth Fantasy with little or no magic in it. Many of David Gemmel's books are more like Low magic. For example, the Waylander books. The actual sub-genre with fantasy, such as your example Urban fantasy doesn't necessarily make it low magic. |

It could be argued that the actual Lord of the rings books themselves are low magic as really there's not a lot of magic in it, even Gandalf doesn't use that much magic really.

Ah.. So LoTR has the sweeping epic part but not the magic. OK. Thanks.

It's not really completely black and white tbh. To to my mind Low fantasy is a more gritty realistic storyline that isn't focused on lots of magic, gods etc.. | |

Garth Brooks has "Friends in Low Places" How about "Wool" Ted Chiang does some wonderful short work. You could do worse than checking out the Year's Best Anthologies to find authors you might like to explore further. |

You're probably not going to be swamped with author responses, as there are rules concerning where and when authors can self-promote.
