Goodbye to my prs-505
My 505 got damaged yesterday. I do not know what happened to it. It looks like some pressed a book against it. there is a blank spot that takes up the top corner. I have my 600 for now. do not like it as much as the 505. Can't decide if i want to get a used one or something else.

Sony has their trade-in program now where if you send in any brand of ebook reader you'll get a $50 credit towards a new Sony. I did this last year, I sent in my 600 and used the credit to get a 650. You could probably send in both your 600 and 505 and get a T1 for next to nothing.
Last year they gave credit for ebook readers whether they were working or not. I'm not sure about this year's deal. |

I haven't had any problems like others describe - I had one badly formatted book that caused problems, but it was definitely the book and not the reader. I wonder if the red ones have fewer problems? Might do to do a survey. Not sure we could get a big enough sample to mean anything, though. |

i went through the same experience - i stupidly and accidentally put pressure on my 505 screen, which i've enjoyed for over 3 years now, and i was quite heartbroken when it broke. you only realise how dear something is once you can't use it anymore.
i wish i'd known about the trade in program at sony, but i ended up selling it for parts locally, and only recently picked up a t1 - wow! what a device! too bad they're having quality issues with it, this is one market sony is definitely excelling in. for anyone that's thinking about making the plunge, it's an awesome device! what sold me over the kindle is the epub/library support, and over the kobo - the slim form-factor and traditional excellent sony industry-design (second only to apple, imho). my only gripes are the usual complaints about sony making a money-grab by not including a basic cover/case like they did for the 505, but i guess that's where the margins are - accessories. $40 for a basic cover case is ridiculous. i'm off to hunt for a relatively inexpensive cover and charger (unless the iphone usb charger works?) thanks to all for the info - this is a great resource for us.. |

PRS-505 cover useful for PRS-T1
Just in case you didn't get rid of it: The PRS-505 cover sort of fits the PRS-T1. It's about the same height and allows for the stylus to be clipped inside (I do it on the right of the T1, which helps keeping it im place). Of course, it won't really hold it as there are no holes in the T1 to attach it, but as a protection against scratching the screen when carrying it around in a backpack it works fine.

I'm sorry to hear about your 505!! I have a 950 that I love *so much* but I still tend to use my 505 quite a bit. I don't have a proper cover for my 950 yet so I use that when reading in bed or on the couch, places that I feel reasonably safe with it. My 505 is my throw-around reader, and boy is it hardy. And while it doesn't have a pearl screen and the contrast is not as good as my 950's, the 505 is still remarkably clear and so readable, unless in low light conditions. It was a lovely device, but every time I use it now I sorely miss the dictionary feature of my 950.
I would say move on to one of the more recent readers. The x50 series are like works of art. My 950 is seriously a beautiful device, I've said it so many times! and I bet the 650 is too. The 350 wasn't for me, although I still have mine.. still within the return period to Sony, or I may try to pass it off here. I just love the large screen of the 950 so much. and I'm sure the Wi-Fi feature of the T1 is awesome-wireless library lending! Downloading from my Sugarsync account! I don't like the looks of the T1 much but I liked it much better in the pictures where someone skinned it with a matte black skin. |

I have a red one and have never had any issues. What was the resolution of the problems we had downloading the books from that site? I didn't see any more posts from you on it and had forgotten about it until I saw your post.

It really is too bad that Sony had/has no clue about the ebook market. I think their devices are far superior to the competition. I don't think there is a current dedicated reader available that even comes close to being as good as the 950. But I suspect that it won't be all that long where Sony simply gives up on the ereaders. |

I agree. I went through that when they pulled out of the PDA market. I loved my Sony Clie, which I used primarily as an ereader, and was shocked when it suddenly wasn't available anymore. They don't seem to be marketing the current ereaders very much, even in their email promotions. Even so, I'm considering the T1, but will probably wait until the firmware upgrade projected for later this month.

I still have as my only ereader, a prs 505 which I love. I'm aware, however, that it's probably coming to the end of its natural life. Already the battery's totally flat and I'm using it plugged in via the charger while waiting for a lazy techie friend to change the battery.
Half-heartedly looking at other readers incase the battery change kills my 505, I'm disappointed that Sony only have the T1 to offer. The main thing I don't like about this model is the refresh-to-black-every-turn. Kindle seem to have overcome this, doing a full refresh every six page turns. Much as I'd prefer a Sony, there have been so many issues with the only one they currently offer, even taking into account the new firmware update, I think I'd purchase the Kindle Touch. Kindle's eco-system isn't appealling, but they seem to understand what the market wants in its ereaders. The 505 is just what an ereader should be: readable. Since then Sony have gone crazy. ![]() |

The 505 was a great ereader. However, after the new firmware update, my T1 is performing great. It is now stable and doesn't crash. It's not too surprising that they had a firmware issue since they totally redesigned it for the T1. Therefore, I am not too upset since they were relatively quick to fix it. The new Reader desktop software, which is also a major redesign, still needs some work.
The page flash doesn't bother me any more than it did on my other Sony models. However, I know some people are more sensitive to it. When I have tested other ereaders, I found the once every 6 pages flash to be more distracting. Just my personal preference. I would try to find a store nearby that sells both the T1 and the new Kindle to test them out and see which one you prefer. Maybe Currys has both on display? |

The T1 was the first eInk device that I have purchased. My first eReader was the Nook Color (LCD). I went into the store when the new STR came out in June and I found that the flash every 6 pages was distracting. I found myself waiting for the flash. The flashing that the T1 makes is minimal, and after having it now going on 2 months, I hardly notice it at all. This reader is fantastic in my opinion. I, for one, am very glad that I purchased it. I never had the issues others have had with their readers, but I upgraded to the latest firmware anyway. The only thing that I wish that I could have gotten was the great deals that are out there now for the T1 (I did get $20 refunded from my original purchase).

I replaced my 505 with a 650 and am fully satisfied. I've seen a coworker's 600, and it was awful. Get a '(3|6|9)50' or the T1. B&H has it for $89. Practically giving it away! Do you remember what you paid for the 505? I paid about $230 for my 650 plus a cover on top of that.

Our last 505 is leaving today. I bought myself a 505 through Amazon for $260 and my wife's at Borders for $300 back when it was the current model. When I broke my screen I upgraded to a 650 and I got my wife a 950 when they were on clearance at Best Buy. She held onto her 505 since it was such a great device.
We were trying to figure out a present for my mother this holiday season and since she is the one who gave me my love of reading, the 505 got passed on to her. I loaded it up with all of her favorite authors and gave it to her along with an official Sony charger and an M-Edge Platform Jacket. She was thrilled. Now that I have my 650 and the wife has her 950, we don't feel the need to upgrade. I just need to make sure that if the 650 gets broken, it is in the next year or so before the accidental replacement plan expires. |
