Question marks replacing "fl" and "fi"

Hi there, I'm new to the forums so first of all

HI!

I have a book which for some reason has every instance of "fl" and "fi" replaced with a question mark. Example:

Quote:

I said I’d become boring, Kell,” Dockson said. “Not sloppy. I can handle a couple of Ministry ?unkies.”
“Good,” Kelsier said, reaching into his cloak pocket and pulling out a small vial. A collection of metal ?akes ?oated in an alcohol solution within.

and

We arrived in Terris earlier this week, and, I have to say, I ?nd the countryside beautiful.

I'm new to fixing things like this in Calibre, so I haven't figured out if there's a simple way to fix the text, without having to go through the whole book manually - it's a biggie! Obviously, I can't do a simple find/replace... Anyone got any suggestions for me?

AFAIK, these ligatures are primarily created by OS X apps on a Mac and will usually only be displayed correctly if the eReader fonts support them.

If the fonts installed on your eReader do support them and you still see question marks, the only way to fix this is to globally search and replace either the characters or the entity definitions (e.g. ﬂ for fl) in the original source files, before converting them to another format with Calibre.

Since the lines are from a commercial ebook, you may want to contact the book seller for more support.
