Hello - and help!!
Hello from Hervey Bay, Australia. Thanks for a great forum and I hope someone can help me. I recently bought a Kobo WiFi for my disabled wife and installed Kobo Desktop on my PC. I didn't open a Kobo account as I don't intend to by Kobo books at this stage. I won't use the wifi facility at all - the reader is simply to borrow library books via ADE and sideload DRM-free books via calibre.
We are enjoying the ereader experience and the set up we have works perfectly for us. Being an "oldie" and non-technical, I would appreciate any advice withy the following: Do I have to update the reader if I have advice to do so through the Kobo Desktop application? (I have been checking for status updates without the reader attached, though no advice about updates for the WiFi as yet). I am concerned about this after reading the forums here about problems when updating software for Kobos. Being "technically challenged", I don't want to upset a system that seems to be working perfectly and find I cannot remedy any glitch if this were to happen. I'm happy to leave the reader as it is. Am considering purchasing another ereader for myself. If I buy another Kobo (probably the Touch), can I simply connect it to my computer and it will authorise with the current Kobo Desktop installed on my computer? (not sure if I am using the correct terminology and this is clear!) Also would consider the Sony t1 - maybe it would be better to have a different brand of reader installed on my computer rather than "lock in" to one company? I believe both brands will do the job required - library loans and side load drm-free books from calibre - is this true? Is the Sony as easy to intsall and download books as I currently find with the Kobo WiFi? Forum talk also mentions software problems with the Kobo Touch and the Sony t1 - oh dear, what is an oldie to do! Any advice re the above would be greatly appreciated. |

Painter Pete,
Do I have to update the reader? No but it's recommended. Can I simply connect it to my computer and it will authorize with the current Kobo Desktop installed on my computer? Yes. All the info about the updates for the kobo reader : http://blog.kobobooks.com/kobo-eread...ary-functions/ Also, if you have problems you can reset the kobo ereader back to factory settings with a paper clip and put it in the hole in the back of the ereader, ( be sure to backup the books in a folder on your computer) incase you ever have a problem with the device. Thanks johndoe007 and thanks for the welcome from others. Bought a Kobo Touch for my second reader yesterday. So far, all going well - the software installed and updated easily, loaded some books via calibre and am enjoying the new Kobo.
