Downloading non-book files with WiFi?

Was wondering if it was possible to download program files, like Calibre, firmware updates, etc. through a WiFi hotspot with the PRS-T1?

I tried to download Calibre through WiFi to a micro sd card and the T1 would not save it because it was not a recognized file type (ie, not a book). Is there a way to trick it or settings to change that would allow the download?

I'm in a situation where I have rural dial-up (very slow) and no even inconvenient way to download files over about 20 Mb. And no smartphone and no wifi laptop-look away, I'm pathetic.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just managed to download the installer for calibre with my T1.

You will need to root your reader. (Western flavour minimal root package will be for you).

After this, install an alternative webbrowser (I just tried Opera mini). You will find information on installation, which browser works and where to find the package in the same wiki page.

There must be another way, right? Because after rooting I can download apps with the Sony browser, which wasn't possible before.

Interesting, I was not aware, that downloading apps was prohibited, too, when not rooted.
Anyway, downloading an exe did not work with the Sony browser.

If there is a way to teach the browser to accept files with any file-extension, this would be great.

Thanks for the replies.

I read a bit about the "rooting" and it may be a little beyond my comfort level at this point in time.

I did, however, find out that my local library had put in cable internet and has six computer stations, pretty good for this little two horse town. So I now have a fairly painless way to download larger files. But it would still be nice to be able to wifi non-book files to the T1.
