I'm Reading/Purchased managment on website

So yesterday I logged in to my account on the website to delete a few books from my I'm Reading list. Went fine. But then I noticed that this simultaneously deleted them from my Purchased list too. Up until now these two list have always been independent of each other. Is there some kind of glitch with the site right now, or is this a new implementation on the part of Kobo (for which I would see no logic.)?

I want to be able to synch a single book or my reading stats without having to jump through even more hoops...

Any insight?

The one time I tried that - after reading here that deleting something from "I'm Reading" kept it in your purchased history - it deleted it from both lists as well and I scrambled to undelete them. Frankly, I'm confused about how to manage my Kobo library on the site. I'd love buttons that clearly give you the ability to remove something from "I'm Reading" without going the scary "delete" route, or to move them back to "I'm Reading" from purchased.

I do think this is an implementation detail right now; it did used to work the other way; ie dropping from "I'm Reading" left them on purchased.

The server team knows about this. In the meantime, if you are concerned that they might be lost forever (probably not true, but who knows) look in Trash, the third choice besides Purchased and I'm Reading. You can undelete from there. It will put them both in Purchased and I'm Reading, but at least they will be there.

I just did that, btw. I am probably going to avoid sync until I know this is fixed. I really don't want all of those books downloading to my Vox and my Touch.

If you should ever appear to permanently lose a book you have purchased, note that in your account menu, there is a listing of every book you have ever purchased, the date purchased, and the amount you paid.

Just want to add - if you have books that were freebies but are no longer free, they will be gone for good if they are deleted. I just lost a bunch of books because I thought I could remove them from my ipod kobo app without losing them from my library. Ooops. Good think I had backed them up!

This is my understanding of the process. I had a great experience with Customer Care when I asked for help about this.

Please note: The following appears to apply only to books you actually paid for, the ones that can be found in the "My Account" section under "Purchase History". Books that were free when you obtained them, but are no longer free do not behave in this way and appear to be gone forever if they are no longer in "Purchased" or "I'm Reading".

  • Currently both the purchased list and the I'm Reading list only show the books that are in "I'm Reading". These are the same books that would be in the desktop application and on Kobo devices.
  • Books that are not in "I'm Reading, or "Purchased" normally can be found in "Trash".
  • "Trash" is no longer automatically emptied (aka permanently deleted) after 30 days.
  • If, however a book you paid for were to disappear from "I'm Reading", "Purchased" and "Trash" it can still be recovered.
  • The page for the book will display "this item is in your library", even though the kepub is not actually in the three listings (Purchased, I'm Reading, Trash) in the library.
  • You can download the ePUB (assuming it is available in that format) from that page. Note this is true only if you either paid for the book or if it was a free book when you obtained it and it is still free.
  • By clicking on the blue circle with the lower case i, there is an option to save for later. Clicking will put the kepub back in "purchased" and "I'm Reading" which means that the book can, once again, be downloaded to a Kobo device, Kobo App, or read in the Kobo desktop app as a kepub.

I believe I have lost other free books when they were no longer free and I had deleted them from "I'm Reading". This may not be an entirely new behaviour. I have routinely backed up the freebies as ePUBS (when available) for this reason.

The behaviour with free books may change/improve. It appears not to have been an intended part of the change.

Actually you would only be able to recover books that are currently available from Kobo. If they no longer sell that particular edition, you would not be able to recover it this way. As time goes on, I would expect more books you purchased early on to disappear this way.

I'm not convinced that eBooks will disappear from servers in the way pBooks disappear from bookstores. I guess time will tell. Even if this is true, the current change probably would not be a factor. Books that are not on a Kobo server aren't there regardless.

The issue with free books is different as Kobo has no record of what free books a person is "entitled" to as they were never run through the part of the system that tracks such things. Amazon apparently runs free books through the shopping cart part of its system as a $0.00 sale, so they have a record of it. This suggestion was made by the beta group, but I have no idea what might happen. BTW, not everyone wanted to have to use the shopping cart in order to get a freebie. Different strokes...

A note on backing up.

People may not be aware of it, but the kepub editions of books you purchase from Kobo "live" on your computer only as long as they are in your Kobo desktop app. They can be found here on windows 7 machines:
Drive Letter:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Kobo\Kobo Desktop Edition

If you want to keep copies of all of your kepub files forever, then you will want to set up a sync that will move any book that "lands" in your desktop app to another folder, but which never removes a file from that folder--a one way sync.

I use Allway Sync for this. You need to pay attention to the settings when you configure the backup, and you have to have it running in the background (also a setting) so that it picks up each book as it lands in the desktop app folder on your computer. As the Kobo kepub file names are alphaneumeric, rather than a listing by title and author, you will want to know what book you bought on what date to make that backup useful. You can check with the Purchase History in My Accounts on the website for books you have paid for, but you will have to track the free books yourself.

If you don't care if you have the kepubs, then you can use Adobe ePUBs as backups. i have both.

Now this might be a stupid question.... have you ever tried to re-add one of the kEpubs to the original folder after it has been removed?

It's not a stupid question, Peter. I haven't tried--not had a need to. Hummmmm... I do wonder if sideloading it might make the Db reach out for it to add it into the Db.
