New publisher coming to Webscriptions

Science fiction publisher Subterranean Press will release some of its titles as e-books under a new agreement reached with Baen Books. The titles will be sold both individually and as part of Baen’s online subscription service. That service offers electronic editions of titles on a subscription basis, and many titles are available online before the print editions are shipped. Other publishers who sell subscriptions through Baen include Del Rey and Tor Books. William Schafer, publisher of Subterranean, said the deal with Baen will expose his titles to a wider audience.

All of Baen’s electronic products are offered without DRM protection, and Baen publisher Toni Weisskopf said Baen remains committed to that approach. “We don’t treat our customers like criminals, and they don’t act like them. We’ve found that if you treat your readers with respect, they become repeat customers,” Weisskopf said of Baen’s DRM-free strategy.

Subterranean seems to specialize in limited edition prints at extremely high prices... how does it make sense that they're distributing through Webscriptions?

How are they going to price their books at a price that Baen readers will actually pay?

Don't know if this is the right place to ask, but if someone here is a Webscriptions user, I'll be really interested in a feedback on content, easy-to-useness, etc. (even more if it's read with a Sony Reader)

Webscriptions.net is Baen Books ebook retail website. All the ebooks are offered DRM free in multiple formats. As a Sony Reader owner, the one you want MSReader LIT format. It is very easy to use libprs500 to convert LIT to LRF.

The word "Webscription" is Baen's term for their monthly bundle offer. They select about 5 ebooks and offer the bundle for $15. It's a good value.

Thanks, I was speaking of the bundle. It seems a pretty good quantity/price ratio for the SF reader I am. But I wanted to know if you had any insight on the quality/price ratio
(and about the DRM-thing, you answered that one, and it's an answer I like!!)
Your answer let me think that the quality of the content is also a "good value" ?

They have lots of samples chapters from each offering. Just go there, click on the book, sample chapters and enjoy. Then you decide if you want to buy the book, the bundle...

If you visit their website and click on through to a webscriptions month that is out in full, you'll be able to read the first 25% of each book online as a free sample. That should give you a large enough taste to make up your mind. Or you could visit the Baen Free Library (also linked from Webscriptions), where they have about 100 entire novels up for free download.

"C'mon kid, give it a try... first hit's free!" is an effective sales approach.

Thanks all : I'll definitively give it a try
This is the first publisher I bumped on the net when looking for ebooks (as I'm a newcomer in the e-ink devices...). Have I just strike lucky and there are many other publishers so well disposed towards non-drm ebooks, or is Baen sort of an exception ?

BAEN is the very definition of exception when it comes to non-DRM'd ebooks. Not only did they jump at making their ebook releases DRM-free, they've also pioneered the concept of the E-ARC (electronic Advanced Reader/Reviewer Copy) allowing those who simply *cannot* wait for the latest dead-tree novel to 'read it first' electronically. Enjoy your ebooks!
