Cybook announce new Odyssey ebook reader

It claims to have a much faster eInk display, and a touch screen. It looks interesting, but they haven't announced a price yet.

It seems that Google Translate doesn't know what liseuses are in this context. (Reading lights, indeed!)

There is nothing about reading lights in the French. It's a mistranslation. What they're saying is that while the quality and comfort of electronic ink make it the ideal platform for electronic reading, the inherent slowness of the e-paper technology puts off users who are used to the responsiveness of LCD touch tablets such as iPad.

Then they go on to say that the Cybook Odyssey is the first ereader to have the High Speed Ink System (HSIS) technology developed by Bookeen, with a screen responsiveness never achieved with E Ink®.

In other words, it seems the screen is not E Ink. But they don't say what it is

It seems Bookeen doesn't know that that silly word doesn't mean what they think it does.

The people at bookeen speak French better than you do Jon. Liseuse fits in french. It's the proper french word, even though "reading light" is the original meaning.
Though in English, e-reader is better

If it is going to feature this particular display, then I see serious potential already - would be handy for zooming while reading pdf for instance.

Oh, that's interesting. I read it as being eInk with a new controller, but that was from the translation. If it's a different display technology entirely, I wonder if it might be LiquavistaBright, although I'm not sure they're still looking at the eReader market after they got acquired by Samsung.

The only other fast bi-stable display I know about is Mirasol, but I thought they were concentrating on their colour display.

If it's going to feature the display that's on the English blog of bookeen under the title Bookeen Breakthrough E-ink Scrolling (yeah, can't link to the video), then I already see great potential for the device. Would be nice for zooming/scrolling while reading pdf documents for instance.

Also, it looks as though it will have an 800MHz processor, about what would be needed for an improved fluid display I guess. Now wondering how much it's going to cost.

My guess is that it's a pearl screen with added thingy. (But well, it's just a guess).

Some of the other Bookeen devices use the Sipix display, the feedback on which has not been terribly favourable.

Oh, this post back in May?

That certainly is just be an eInk screen with enhanced controller electronics.

Maybe it's the one in other video on the cybook youtube channel then. Or a trimmed, less costly version of it adapted to displaying text rather than video playback.

On second thoughts, based on earlier blog entries of Bookeen, it is most likely that this is E Ink Pearl with optimized software.
This is what Bookeen said in a blog post last week:

for material reasons we won’t be able to propose this speed on the Orizon, unfortunately. It’s partly thanks to highly optimised software, but also partly due to new generation hardware developments.

That probably means at least that they won't be using Sipix.

Actually, the French text does imply that it is e-ink, only faster.

Admitting the photo is not too photoshoped, it's not spix, looks closer to pearl in term of color / contrast.

Bookeen is not afraid of photoshopping. The pictures of the Orizon on their site show the same unrealistic contrast.
