Best way to work on Library between 2 PC's
One PC one Laptop, both win7 both share homegroup etc, both used exclusively at home, nothing complicated just a simple set up.
All I want to do is occasionally work on my library (getting metadata and images updating tags) when on my Laptop. What would be the most simple and robust way to do this. I imagine some times I would have the main PC off, that's where my Calibre is at present. I'm thinking of putting the new portable version on a usb stick, then copying over my Calibre Library Folder, putting that in the laptop When done tagging, copying the Calibre Library Folder back to my main PC and replacing the original. I imagine there are other files that change of get altered though, and I don't want to mess things up. Any thoughts? |

That sounds interesting, I do have dropbox, though I will prob run out of space....
Calibre is fine with the library being anywhere I see but what about the Settings folder (C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\calibre?) would I need to have s symbolic link to let Calibre know where it is? Also why do you need to start Calibre via a batch file? Thanks for the suggestion Actually this morning I was playing with Team viewer which worked great but only useful while main PC is on, and to be honest it was a little awkward due to the 1680*1050 being used on a netbook screen of 1024*600 lol |

if you look at calibre-portable.bat file within the resources sub-folder of the calibre install location (in a text editor) and read the embedded comments you will see it allows you a lot of control over where various calibre files are placed. This can be useful in a lot of scenarios (not just the portable one).

Oh thanks for that, will have a look, and see which is easiest for me, symbolic links or bat files.

I'm looking for ways to sync two Calibre libraries, one on my desktop, the other on my laptop.
I've just read this thread, but I am unclear if what you guys have discussed is what I need to do. If not, what's the simplest way to go about it? I've already considered a straight copy of the folder/sub folder structure where my library is stored and copying it to one machine and then back to the other when updates have been done. Would this work? |

I simply have my entire DB on an external HDD. An USB stick would do the same. Simply stick the HDD/stick in the pc you're working on at the moment, and continue working.

I realize that this is an old thread, but it's what I found when trying to accomplish the same thing. And, it didn't help me, so I'm replying with the solution that I came up with.
I'm not using Windows, but the same process should apply. I created a new library in a directory 'SyncLibrary' on both machines. On my laptop, I deleted the metadata in SyncLibrary and then linked to the SyncLibrary directory on the desktop to SyncLibrary on my laptop (I used sshfs, but I'm sure that there is some way to do the same thing on Windows). Whatever files that I had changed the metadata on my laptop were then copied to the SyncLibrary library via calibre. On my desktop, they were copied from SyncLibrary to the 'Calibre Library', which gave me the duplicates message. I could then delete the copy that didn't have the metadata changes. |
