Help a newbie decide

Hi everybody,
I've got obsessed by the thought of buying an e-reader for some months now and I'm a newbie in this field.
My needs are :
1-Great screen for long term reading (> 8 hours a day).
2-Good at reading PDF and CHM files (my refference books' format; some are large 500 mb files)
3-Ability to highlight and probably take notes.
Price is not a very important issue.

If a high priority is to read PDFs, you want a large screen. For large screen and note taking, my recommendation would be the iRex DR1000S.

Thanks, but what about .chm file support? It's essential for me. Trying to convert them by calibre fails (I don't know whether it's because their large sizes or them having multilevel links inside or what). Is there a firmware/software update for iRex products to support CHM?

I don't know of any eInk device which reads CHM files, I'm afraid.

FBreader lists chm as supported format, although with a lengthy disclaimer text:
http://www.fbreader.org/docs/formats.php

More about the FBreader on DRS1000s can be found here.

Well, the "comparison matrix" declares some devices such as HanLin eBook V3/V3+,Pocketbook products and Onyx Boox natively support CHM.

Thanks for the info. Got to check if its support is satisfactory for large files.

Do also check out the 'Which One Should I Buy?' thread here, Sarmaee. And -- apart from your needs as a reader -- you should also consider your needs as an ebook buyer. Geographical location can make a big difference when it comes to getting the titles you want. Good to have your company. Looking forward to hearing you've found the ideal machine. Best wishes. Neil

I wouldn't buy based on CHM support. It shouldn't be difficult to convert to a more mainstream format.

If I recall correctly, the iRex products sport FBReader, and FBReader reads CHM.
