Ectaco has, in the past, made firmware updates available to make the jetBooks fully
functional as the devices that they are sold as. In other words the earlier jetbooks as
ebook readers. But the programming that makes the hardware work has never been
released as "opensource" even if parts of the OS implementation are.

The new Color jetBook has been implemented as an etextbook reader and note taker
for the academic environment. I hope that they eventually provide an implementation
of the firmware that makes it a more general purpose ebook, emagizine, comic, emanual,
reading device with note taking. It will never be very good as a multimedia entertainment
device and no attempt to make it one has much of a chance. I for one think there should
be a market for a dedicated improved (color), larger format, reading device and the note
taking seems a natural and complementary added feature.

If you want a multimedia player, this would not be the device.

Luck;
Ken
