I'm getting a message in the notification area "Low on Application space". I was installing an .apk from Dropbox and when I touch Install I get an error "Insufficient Application Storage" and an option to Manage Applications or Cancel. I went to the App store and was able to install one via Amazon. I tried again with side-loading and I still get the same errors.

Anyone know what I can do about this? I have 144 apps (all are very important apps that I MUST have ). My device shows 4.39g of 6.54 available. Seems that should be plenty of space for my little 70 kb app I want to install.

I have read in another forum that the same problem has been reported by others. One suggestion was to remove several apps and then reinstall them. Someone mentioned that this fixed the problem for him/her.

I've tried that and it didn't work. I know it must be something totally simple...

There is only 1 GB of memory on the Fire partitioned for App storage.

System files take up about 2 GB, with the remainder going for Personal Storage (App Data - not the App itself, books, music, videos etc.). Android tablets usually have two types of memory partitions, one formatted in Linux (EXT) for Apps (normally the smaller partition - internal storage) and one formatted FAT 32 for Data Storage (normally larger partition - external storage). The 4 GB of memory free on your Fire is external storage (FAT32 partition). Android can't execute Apps off of a FAT32 partition. The Fire only supports installing 1 GB worth of Apps. With 144 Apps installed you have almost reached the Fire's App storage limit and will need to uninstall some unnecessary Apps to be able to install other Apps. Note: FYI only. Android 2.2 and above tablets with an SD card slot can support Apps 2 SD using an external partitioned SD card, one partition being FAT32 and the other partition EXT. The larger partition is normally FAT32 and the smaller partition is EXT. The FAT32 partition is still used for universal access of data and the EXT partition is used by Android 2.2 and above for external App storage. Last edited by obsessed2; 12-01-2011 at 09:35 PM. |

Dreamwriter, I had read the info at kindleboards but not the other one. It does make me feel better knowing I'm not alone!

Obsessed, that is the best explanation yet! It makes perfect sense other than the fact I can't figure out why they would allow so little space for apps on an android device. Seems someone wasn't thinking in the production/planning meetings. I've actually deleted several apps and I still can't install any more....unless they are from the amazon app store. Now why is that? |

I can't. I have to be picky. My phone only has 256MB and with all the pre installed worthless apps only 100MB for my apps. so I only keep the ones I use. Apps2SD Pro works great in helping me keep my space down. I wish we could use it on the fire.

It depends on how the developer has the game data set up. Some install directly to SD Card or External memory as it's call in the Fire. I have 365MB of internal memory still which is where the apps normally go.

Success! I deleted all cache and cleared data in the appmanager...for the third time. I attempted to install again before I shut it down and it didn't work. After the shutdown it worked perfectly and the notification has disappeared. I don't really know why the previous 2 shutdowns didn't do the trick. I'm happy now that I can continue my hoarding. LOL
