What PE updates are available at the moment without risk of WSOD or worse?

I bought my PE about a month ago. Since then I've been lurking in the forums. Did a ermine update but quickly reverted back to dingo when I saw that many ermine machines are having white screen of death issues.
I really wanted to get android market but the methods I found need ermine.

What are the updates that are available at the moment that pose no WSOD or other known risks?

There is always a risk when updating any operating system - ask any sysadmin about the risks of updating windows with patches.

The number of people that have experienced the WSOD is very small compared to the number of units in use - we get to read about them here just because they have it and very few people register and/or post that their units are working without problems. Remember that any forum will get a disproportionate number of people with problems which masks the real world conditions.

You say you updated to Ermine - obviously you didn't get the dreaded WSOD so what is your problem? Use the standard Ermine update from Entourage and don't do anything silly and you should have no trouble.

I updated my full size eDGe as soon as Ermine was available and have not had anything that I would call a problem. There are those with PEs that have likewise updated to Ermine without problems and post here trying to help others.

Just remember this forum is where people come for help and advice and people only ask for help when they have a problem.

ivanjt is right. The number of people actually experiencing the WSOD is small in comparison to the number of PEs in use. In fact, I think the WSOD is more of a hardware related issue than a software related one. Google White Screen of Death and you will find everything from iPods to GPS experience it.

I updated 2 Pocket Edges in April 2011 on day one when I received them and I haven't had a problem with either one. Occasionally, I'll get a short white screen when coming out of screen saver or hibernation but, it isn't even something that worries me anymore. It pops up for a second or two and then goes back to black and I'll hit the MENU button again and everything is OK. The Ermine Beta on the Pocket Edge is a highly polished update and was close to being an official release had Entourage stayed in business.

I bought a used full-size Edge in May 2011 that was upgraded to Ermine and it too performs well. No major problems except green pictures from the camera. However, this is not a problem that occurs on the Pocket Edge update.

You will find multiple download links for the Pocket Edge Ermine update throughout this Forum. In my resource Sticky, I have provided links to the ones that have been tried and work for other forum members. However, since you already have a working update you shouldn't have any major problems. Just stick with the update you have.

Finally, like ivanjt said, when upgrading any OS there is a slight chance that something can go wrong. However, you have an advantage because you already know how to upgrade; and downgrade in the event something does.

I think the only way to increase the WSOD chance is to overclock the CPU

the pablob golden ermine is better as has more space for installing apps and can use the sd card for library
