Pocket Edge fried (put 24v instead of 12v) - ideas?
I've been very happy with my PE for over 2 months, but this morning it started making a hissing sound when connected to a charger (variable 12-24v charger from ebay - not a stock charger) and wouldn't charge.
I played around with some settings and accidentally switched the charger to 24v (while PE was hibernating). After that, it wouldn't turn on (tried reset, etc) Any ideas on what can be done? (usually some capacitor burns up, so I can find a similar one and replace it). However, looking at a stock motherboard (I haven't opened my PE yet), I don't see any "replaceable" parts :-) Thanks, Roman |

hard to tell what damage could have been done. If something gave out immediately the rest might be okay or if not multiple stuff could have fried.
Some things to try. I would leave it set overnight and try it, may have some sort of protection circuit though I doubt it. 1. if brave enough to open it up unhook the battery and try the proper charge voltage. 2. Look for blackened areas near the power plugs connection to the board. That sort of jolt could well have smoked something. 3. Look for a fuse though in this small circuitry fuses are kind of hard to recognize. Lots of luck! Hard to have a friend go away :-( |

Thanks to everybody for the help. I've completely disassembled it, but couldn't see any signs of damage. I'll keep on looking for some other solutions.

You might try unplugging the battery and plug in the proper ac adapter. There is some charging circuitry built into some batteries. Might be that it, if it exists on the edge, is keeping it from running.
I'd guess you fried a component or two in the charging circuit wherever it is located. |

Get out your test meter and start following the track from the power input socket and test any component that is in line with that track. There may be an inline solid-state fuse that has blown, they are usually rectangular and green in colour - it will most probably not appear damaged but will be open circuit.
You should also try following the circuit from the battery as well. |
