I am thinking of getting a kindle, can you tell me is it possible to upload my own ebooks via the computer or I am tied into using Amazon purchase?

As long as the books are in a format the Kindle can read (AZW, TXT, PDF, MOBI), yes. It's called sideloading.

Kindle appears as a removable disk when plugged in via usb, any books you put in the Documents folder that are in azw or mobi format (plus a handful of others like pdf/txt that l_macd mentions) will be useable directly. The rest, like epub, you can convert with calibre.

Just be careful with PDFs. Some work well, others are an exercise in futility.

PDFs are a very mixed bag, certainly.

Some PDFs are best viewed as is, in PDF format. Some are better after conversion to MOBI. Most are somewhat flawed either way.
