Have the Chinese discovered the future of publishing?
Been reading this article about how, in China, consumers are buying series pulp fiction with micro-payments. It's huge apparently.

The trend looks like it is going toward direct inter-web publishing, nothing printed on paper unless there is a demand. The big publishing houses may become like the dodo bird, if not careful.

So yes , this could become very popular world wide.

this micro-transaction model is seeing massive success in things like facebook games and "free to play" online pc games so its no surprise that it would be successful in publishing too.

an author here on MR releases 10k word snippets of his sci-fi serial every other month or so and i can't snap them up quickly enough so personally this model would work for me as a reader.

I guess they had to try something in China. You can't get any money the "normal" way. They pay cash for virtually everything except real estate, because there is no trust. Even when you sell industrial goods to companies, you always demand cash in advance.

I don't think that this is the future of publishing. (Which is not to say that there might not be a niche for this.) I think that most people want to sit down and read a complete book, not part of a book and then wait for the next bit.

This might help with piracy, though.

Books with DLC, how novel.

Could take another novel and terrible concept from games these days: book is free, but paragraphs detailing the meat action are locked and paid for, in the cents range.
