PRS650 screen transplant

Recently I was reading my PRS650 in bed with a metal torch. Long story short, I feel asleep and woke up to hear the bash of the metal torch impacting with the screen. Luckily I didn't completely crack the screen but there are now 2 unsightly grey "smudges" where the impact of the torch has caused the little e-ink capsules to leak out. Needless to say this accident caused me great angst as I'm unable to find anywhere selling another 650, and am not keen on the PRS-T1 at this stage.

I do however have a first generation Kobo which has a 6" screen, but not the higher contrast Pearl screen of the 650. So my (perhaps naive) question to any of the more technically minded: is it possible to transplant the screen from the kobo to the sony? I'm aware that the contrast is slightly lower and the refresh rate not as high, but at least it won't have the annoying smudges right in the middle of the screen.

Any help appreciated.

Well, I was all ready to say its not possible but here a link to a website where someone has transplanted a Sony screen into a broken kindle.

You can always buy another second hand 650 off ebay and use it for spare parts.

Meh just get a t1. I love the 650 as well, but you will pay a premium for them now.(over $300 on ebay for new ones.) Repairing the screen will probably just cause more headaches than it is worth. Just put the money towards a new t1.

log a warranty call with Sony, they just replaced my cracked screen FOC as the device was in warranty. That said mine broke while sitting on a table overnight without any impact at all while in a Sony(TM) case took under a week to fix it too

Thanks for the replies and sorry for the late reply. In the end I ordered in a new PRS-650 from ebay. I've tried the T1 but still like the 650 better.

You could do it, but the donor ereader would've had to have signed papers indicating donor status, and the recipient ereader would need to be put on immuno-suppresive medication life-long. You've got to ask yourself - is it worth it?

I think all ereaders should be treated as opted in, and have to register to be able to opt out of transplant surgery - must be ereaders all over the place looking for a life-line........

What if the ereader's religion prohibits such donation? It's maker could stipulate in their holy manuals that such actions could void the warranty of their e-souls.
