Question about T1 when using a Mac

My Dad wants to get my mom an e-reader. She saw my 650 and really liked it. I'm thinking of recommending the Sony. I noticed Walmart has 2 in stock here although I think they are the wrong colour but nice to see one locally.

I don't see my mom buying a lot of books although likely some of them and she will definitely get books from the library. I am thinking that the Sony would be a good fit for her since she likely would not have to plug in to her computer often. My parents have a Mac. Is there any reason that this would cause a problem. I thought I read about the Sony software on a mac being a problem. With the T1, would it be often that she would even need to go on a computer?

I also read about some technical issues people are having. Do we think Sony might do a firmware update for this. I don't want my mom to get frustrated or she won't use it. From the video reviews I have seen, I think the new reader looks great and would likely be a nice fit for my mom.

I would have to see about getting her a colour other than black. She won't buy anything black, whether it is an appliance, electronic device or anything. I wish it came in the white like kobo. She would like that. I am considering that as well but thinking the library access etc of the sony would be better.

Thanks, sorry for the rambling! I wish I was getting this for me. Maybe next year when the next model comes out, lol. I do love my 650, just would love to have the wifi to go with it.

mcrmama, I have a Mac and the T1. It works just fine with the Sony software. Because of the T1's wireless capability, then you don't really need a computer (unless your mom doesn't have Wi-fi at home). She can buy books through the Sony store on the device. You can also download books from websites like Kobo or Feedbooks as well. A really cool feature is that you can download books from local libraries on the T1 through the browser without needing to connect to a computer!

The T1 comes in black, red or white. You probably have to order online (like the Sony website) to find white. I am thinking of getting my mom a red T1 to replace her old 505 since it is so much easier to use, and I think she'd find it more convenient with the wireless access (especially the library).

Thanks! I was thinking for some reason that it was silver, my bad, that was the 650's. She does have wireless. I love that the library access is wireless for her. She does not load her ipod herself since it is on the computer. They have a nice computer but she tends to surf the net, check e-mails, use word processor etc. She has not figured out itunes etc.

I bought a white T1 yesterday from a Sony shop. It looks great and doesn't show any marks from handling.

I also have it connected to my Mac. The first time you attach it to the Mac, the Finder (think "Windows Explorer") shows an installer for the Mac version of the Sony Reader software. It works OK for me, and I think you have to use the desktop reader to initially authorise your reader hardware. Or at least you do here in the UK where there's no Sony Reader online store.

But the Sony Reader Mac software seems OK anyway.

So your dad's got no excuses

There are existing Sony Reader bookstores in Canada and US. For those, you can authorize the device without needing the computer. I connected to my Wi-fi, clicked the Reader Store icon on the T1 home screen, entered in my account info, and it was authorized. I already had an account. However, if you don't have an account, then I think it prompts you to create one.

I think my parents likely have an account so just need to authorize it. Cool. I think I might also e-mail books to mom if it is not readily available and see if we can make that work. Sounds like you had it working bookworm_girl in another thread.

I owe my sister a case and if we buy the case for my mom, then I can get a discount at Sony Canada. Do you know if the case with light works well wit the T1 (assuming there is one, haven't checked the site yet).

Yes, I have the case with the light. I like it. The light covers the screen pretty evenly. It is lighter and less bulky than the lighted case for the x50 models.

Yes, I have been able to download books from email - both my personal ISP webmail and gmail.

Well, when setting the T1 region to "united states" I can access the US store

I consused about autorization, in installed ADE, autorized it.
Then, pluged reader, autorized reader. Reader can now open drm infected epub with the account used in ade (despite not giving adobe login or password.)
Then, when connecting the shop "do you want to link that reader to you shop account ?"
