I have a couple thousand books (paper) I want to add to a record keeping system, calibre, if this is possible. I have paper pads, lists and >200 books on my Kindle, my goal is see what I have, what I've already read in an effort NOT to buy books I've already read. Can this process be done on calibre? I'll put in the effort to keypunch every author/title so I an ultimately getr rid of all the paper books - downsizing.

I use the option in Calibre to add empty book entries and then set up the metadata appropriately. I then add a tag called PAPER.

I guess one could also use a custom column to track this, or perhaps even rely on a search for formats:false (if you do not ever intend to add empty book entries for other purposes).

I have seen other people talking about scanning in the ISBN as an aid to retrieving metadata from the web.

If you create a file called dummy.PAPER, then you can add this to the individual records in the edit metadata window (formats) or the book info pane, or multi select several files to add it to, click the arrow on Add books, and 'Add files to selected book records' and then browse and select the dummy.PAPER file.

You then have Paper in formats.
