A/V enhanced ebooks

I was recently looking forward to buying an ebook that was advertised as being "A/V enhanced", but when it was released it turned out that the enhanced version was for iPads only.

I assume by "A/V enhanced" they mean there are links in the book that you can click on to hear audio without leaving the book. The T1 can play audio. Can it only play mp3s, etc, the normal way, or is it possible to create an ebook for it with links like this?

I'm not expecting to make the iPad version of the book work on the Sony, just wondering if it's even possible to create an ebook like this that will work.

(I also have to say that the audio player on this device is very basic - no search function!)

Someone should correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe epubs with audio/video are part of the epub3 specification. I don't know of any current reader models which support epub3.

Does the iPad support epub3? I don't know, maybe it supports Apple-flavoured epub3, i.e. completely non-standard.

There aren't any books that I know of like that for eink devices. However, the Kindle store, B&N and Apple store sell enhanced books with A/V that work with tablet readers and/or apps on iDevices. For example, I have bought a few enhanced books at B&N that work on my NOOKcolor but aren't compatible with the Nook e-ink reader.

Can any of these enhanced books be read with a 'general' reading app (e.g. Mantano, CoolReader, Aldiko et al) or are they only readable with the bookseller's own app on the bookseller's own device?

Only specific to the sellers apps and/or devices as far as I know. For the B&N books they only work on the NOOKcolor stock reading app and don't work in the B&N app on my iPhone. The Kindle books do work in the Kindle app on iOS devices. The Apple books require iBooks.

Thanks, it doesn't look like I'll be buying these books any time soon.

I don't know that the ones that I bought were worth it. I tried them more out of curiosity. Maybe a cookbook with video demonstrations would be interesting or a non-fiction book with hard to find videos. I bought a short story by Anne Rice that had interviews attached to each chapter but I could have found similar info on-line. I also bought a fiction book that had scenes from the movie adaptation integrated into it. I should have just bought the plain book.
