1949 review of Orwell's "1984"

I just found this review of Orwell's 1984 from a 1949 issue of Life magazine in google books.

I think it is very interesting, mainly because it is contemporary with the book.

I like the illustrations! Better than the movie's images.

What a fascinating article. And Abner Dean's drawings are superb. Thanks for sharing.

I was hoping for insight to what people of 1949 thought of the book, but the article is mainly summaries and excerpts. Nice refresher, though, of an important book.

1984 and Brave New World should paired reading, as they're two sides of the coin of social control. Elements of both books are used in today's society, and seeing them can make you a better citizen.

By the way, here is what Life had to say on Brave New World in 1948
