75 years of CanLit on CBC: Margaret Atwood's Survival
75 years of CanLit on CBC: Margaret Atwood's Survival CBC 75 On November 2, 2011, CBC celebrates its 75th anniversary and CBC Books is taking part in the celebration with a look back at 75 years of Canadian literature. Over the years, CBC has interviewed authors known and new, covered literary awards and hosted book clubs. CBC personalities have written books themselves; some have had books written about them. Join us this month as we feature some of our favourite moments and books from the past 75 years! Margaret Atwood We'd be remiss if we were to celebrate Canadian literature without including Margaret Atwood. The writer, poet and essayist has won numerous awards and has garnered critical acclaim the world over. While Atwood is best known for her own works of literature, she also makes waves when she critiques or defends the written word. Just this summer, Atwood took to her Twitter account to stand up for public libraries and ended up in a war of words with Toronto city councillor Doug Ford, the mayor's brother. Ford and Atwood have since made up, but the incident still inspired an "Atwood for Mayor" campaign. Rest: http://www.cbc.ca/books/2011/10/75-y...et-atwood.html |

For musicians, you might want to check out Crash Vegas. I definitely recommend their debut Red Earth as well as Aurora.

Smoke would definitely be in the Cowboy Junkies stream. Overall Aurora is a brilliant album from beautiful to disturbing to catchy. One of my favourite albums of all time.
Then again, this is supposed to be about writers. My favourite Canadian authors: Rohinton Mistry (A Fine Balance) Douglas Coupland (Generation X, Generation A, All Families are Psychotic) |

One of the neat things about immigrating here eleven years ago was the discovery of some amazing authors I probably would never have heard of if I had stayed in the US. Not Atwood, of course or people like Alice Munro--they are well known outside of Canada. So many books, so little time...

Speaking of the CBC and books, the Radio program "Writers and Company" is one of my favourite programs in any medium. Eleanor Wachtel does a fantastic job interviewing authors, drawing them out and creating an atmosphere of intimacy with the audience. I'm not sure if the podcasts are available outside Canada, but anyone who can download them should give them a try.
