Kindle 3 - dead
well.... I normally don't hang out in the kindle forum.. as it normally works and my daughter is happy as a clam..
but *sigh* the k3 has kicked the bucket. and it is out of warranty. Amazon cust service has tried to walk me thru a hard reset and soft reset.. with no luck. I have torn apart the device. removed battery, reset hard soft , but nada. The image is stuck on there. I think the device isn't charging and the battery isn't dead enough to pull a charge to reset the screen. I have tried to put it on the wall charger when the indicator is in amber.. to kick in the charge cycle, but even after it goes green.. it still won't refresh the screen .. can't seem to make it reboot. The device can be seen on the computer via usb. i can read/write the files on there. Any ideas? anyone? Thanks ![]() Last edited by tvuongpham; 06-18-2012 at 01:18 PM. |

You may have more success posting to the Kindle Dev Corner forum. If you do not have a dead eink display, and it is bricked from bad firmware or configuration, you may be able to reflash the firmware using the serial port. See the seaniko7 YouTube "Unbrick you K3" video, and check out his mobileread thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=134637
You can test the kindle display by temporarily swapping it with another K3. Because the display connectors are near the edge, you do not even need to remove the display from the case (just open the back). |

Too bad you tore it apart. Sometimes Amazon will send a reduced price or even free replacement. By removing stuff you probably have made that not possible.

Amazon offered another refurbished unit for 65.00 during the call. But i prefer the current gen of touch screen interfaces. I just got my Prs-T1 and really like it. Perhaps the K-Touch is on par.
I have ext warranty from AMEX - as I purchased via Amex and that is a cardholder benefit, but still would like to get the device working again. I would rather not by a lot of expensive cables to bootstrap the device.. *sigh* Maybe I will leave it in usb disk mode until the battery dies and try to reset it again.. BTW the tear apart is un-obtrustive.. can't even tell it was taken apart.. |

The image is "stuck?" Are you sure it isn't a broken substrate?

Take a pic and post it here. Those who have seen a broken screen will be able to tell.

If you want to see what a Kindle with a broken substrate looks like, take a look at the picture in Post #6 in this thread:

I bought the apple care plus for my iPad because I would be very sad to pay to replace it when I sit on it due to sleep deprivation, dogs, and baby. I would have freaked if I had broken my K1. Thank god the current models are more reasonably priced.

Subtrate is not damage. NO visble sign of damage. Won't reboot, but can mount the usb device as a storage device. weird. Too bad i can't just drop a new OS on the usb partition and force a reboot. |
