PRS T1 - My first reader
Prior to receiving my T1 I have been trying to learn a bit about downloading ebooks and am getting a little confused. I don't want to be confined to purchasing from Sony only. After charging the battery do I have to install any other software?. I read mention of ADE?. Then I read that the Sony software isn't very impressive. Can someone help this old-timer please?.

Nicko-you don't have to buy books from Sony, but it is easy to do so, their prices seem to be competitive with Kobo though. adobe digital editions (ADE) to enable, click the sony store icon on your T1 and create a free account. It is then ready to download books from the public library without having to connect to a computer

Thanks for your prompt response. I understand about purchasing from Sony. Can you explain ADE please.? I presume that if I want to purchase from the many other stores then I have to install other software?.

ADE is basically the legal key to unlock purchased or borrowed epubs so they can be read.
Information about ADE: http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/ I'm sure others more knowledgeable than I will chime in, but I do think ADE is usually sufficient for most purchases. (I pretty much exclusively download from the public library for free. I have only purchased 2 books so far in over a year of ownership of my ereader: a pdf manual for my camera that resides on my desktop and 1 epub) |

I understand. I appreciate your help. I am probably making this more difficult for myself than need be. Cheers.

So, you make an account with SONY, using your email address. That email address is recorded as your Adobe DRM email. You then use the same email address to make an account on Amazon - your Amazon account will be linked to the same Adobe DRM account and, if you purchase and download an epub from Amazon, you will be able to access it on your SONY. No need to install additional third-party software. Another scenario - you want to read your DRM books on another device - say an iPad. You download an app that supports DRM (for example, Bluefire) and make an account with the same email address - it will allow you using your SONY purchases on your iPad. Or, at least, that's how I understand it - and remember it. I have been stripping DRM from my books for a while, so not to deal with all the related problems. |

err - Amazon does not sell epubs ??? so bad example. but the theory is sound for all retailers except amazon.
to buy & read from Amazon you will have to learn about conversion tools as Sony does not display Kindle books. |

The local library's supply of eBooks is so random that I have grab books I want to read as and when they become available, even if I'm not ready to read it at the time. With DRM there is only a fourteen day period before they expire so I strip the DRM and read them when I get time. I know it's not an ethical thing to do but until the library gets more than one or two copies of the books to serve the needs of a whole county (state) then I'm afraid needs must. |

![]() Although I'm not sure if Sony offers any DRM-free books, their store isn't available here yet. |
