Adhoc Connection Solution

I'm sure some have stumbled on it, but for those who haven't. ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher is a app on slideMe network that allows the PE/(EE Im guessing too), to switch into Adhoc Mode. Allowing your Edge to see and connect to another Android wifi source. Like your phone for many of you.

**NOOK COLOR CAUTION** If a random Nook user finds this page, please look up more on it. One person mentioned that this program made their Nook Color unusable.

Credit for bring my attention to it is msavides.

*Notice* As the app will tell you when you run it, it was created for a certain tablet. But the creators have a "Just try it.." setting if it isn't this tablet, allowing any droid 2.1 os or up to run it. I've had no problems with it so far, but I haven't had it long or used it more then testing currently. So as always, decide for yourself.

WEP wifi encryption works with this program(only supports wep, which is droid normal so far). Make sure you have the Internet Providing Android's SSID(apostrophes may make connection invisible or unable to connect. Example SSID/Router name. Mac's Router ) and WEP KEY entered under ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher settings before connecting. It runs the app and supports encryption which for many it didn't, which is nice for starters.

Either way, I was able to get encrypted wep wifi internet to my PE Ermine 0.9(Original Unaltered Ermine build, new Ermine versions haven't been tested fyi) from my sprint Samsung 4G Epic with my phone running Wireless Tether. Only downside is the ZT program won't remember more then one network, so switching is crappy if you need to frequently. Otherwise it is fine.

ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher v1.4c apk *Requires Rooted PE*

Wireless Tether 2.0.7 apk *Requires Rooted Phone*

Hope it works for you. Please comment if you want to add or bring anything to attention.
Id love to hear any other ways to work this out.

I've found a forum page that seems to have the app creator as the thread starter. He states the same as I have mostly, except he has fix for users with Android (phone wifi problems obviously) that have regular wifi problems after using his app. http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/1600...dhoc-switcher/

The creator also has a less regarded thread that has an EE user that wants to know if it's safe and how to know if he's rooted. Someone tells him how to check but he never responds afterward if he rooted and worked it out. (Either he rooted and got it to work, which means he cared not to let other knows. Or he never cared to do the rooting after he realized his EE wasn't rooted.) I pray the first one. http://www.chinadigitalcomm.com/andr...her-t2421.html

BEYOND THIS IS MARKET PLACE APP DESCRIPTION

On Marketplace page.

Description
Easily apply 'TxPower' mod and tether to your phone for Internet access.

WARNING:
This application is intended to be used with devices having an RT2870, RT3070 or Texas Instrument Wi-Fi module, although it has only been tested with the Zenithink ZT-180 tablet with Android 2.1 and 2.2 OS versions.

It should work with other devices using one of these Wi-Fi modules or with other OS versions, or even might work with devices using other Wi-Fi modules on "just to try..." mode, as for example the iMX515 tablet with Atheros module (thanks to Miguel Minglas for his help on testing), but that's not sure and it's something you try at your own risk. According to received comments, in addition to ZT-180 the application worked on the following devices: iMX515, Samsung Galaxy Tab P1010 and FlyTouch 2.

IF YOUR DEVICE IS NOT A ZT-180 OR ONE OF THE DEVICES REPORTED AS COMPATIBLE AND THE APPLICATION DOESN'T WORK, THEN DON'T GIVE A BAD RATING. PLEASE, IN SUCH CASE USE THE SEND REPORT OPTION OFFERED BY THE APPLICATION.

----------------------

ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher is an utility created to easily apply/restore the 'TxPower' (for some devices only) mod and to switch the Wi-Fi connection between the default infrastructure mode, which allows the connection to routers or access points, and the ad-hoc mode, which allows the connection to another Wi-Fi device, such a phone which is sharing its Internet connection (tethering).

For this application to work properly it needs a 'rooted' device.

NOTES:
- Sometimes the application may take a while to start, showing a blank screen; please wait.
- Before to switch to ad-hoc mode, remember to go to settings and set the SSID which your phone's tether application uses and, if necessary, the WEP key.
- Sometimes the ad-hoc connection may take a while or may not be made at first attempt; please wait 30 seconds or even 1 minute and if the connection is not at least attempted ("trying to connect to..." status) then disable and re-enable Wi-Fi; if the connection is attempted but is not successful then revise the SSID and WEP key on settings.
- The "refresh Wi-Fi on system boot" option causes Wi-Fi to be turned off and then turned on again at boot time, but only if the previous Wi-Fi state was enabled and there is no active connection after boot; if Wi-Fi was disabled when the device was powered off or rebooted then it will remain disabled at boot, or if device succeeded to establish a connection at boot by itself then the refresh will be omitted to keep that connection. This option may be useful on some situations when a device has problems to automatically connect at boot, although the Wi-Fi is on, but it can connect fine if the Wi-Fi is turned off and on again.

p.s. For a good laugh, I was pretty confused at first when I saw this forum solution under a google search for user comments. hah. Imma dummy.

I'm going to give it a try. I have a rooted Fascinate and I haven't been able to get anything to pull when tethered. I'm going to try this and see if it works. Thanks!

OK, I just installed app, but afraid to mess on. I need EE in next few months and can not risk something bad right now (outside US).

Hope people will post their experience here with this app.

I'm sure people will try this way, but I'm not sure all of them will care to comment on the follow through. So I will post some info and comments found online.

There aren't many comments on Market. Half made their phone either restart a lot or mess up regular wifi connections for them. The other half had it work on their android phones without problem.

I've tested it with my PE and used it to change the wifi from Infrastructure Mode(Unit to Router) to Adhoc Mode(Unit to Unit) without problem during testing. Webpages and Web access worked as perfectly as I hoped.

I'll continue to edit my posts with new info. Others please do the same.

I hope it works for you. One users comment that tried to install ZT Switcher to their fascinate phone wasn't able to get it to see other adhoc connections. If the fascinate is the internet source, im sure it will work if Wireless Tether works.

I used adhoc and garden tether to connect my PE to my Samsung Galaxy Prevail. I've been using it off and on now for a week with no problems, other than battery drain. I would like to have the option to connect using the bluetooth but it doesn't want to work. So I only use wifi.
Thanks for posting on this.

Have you tried the bluetooth enabler that was mentioned in the keyboard thread to see if it helps?

Here is Open Garden.
Open Garden On Market

Otherwise if anti-market.. It's Backed Up files with TI fyi.
Open Garden 1/3
Open Garden 2/3
Open Garden 3/3

Barnacle Wifi Tether was another common one I found.

Barnacle Wifi Tether apk

Lemme know how they go for you.

Thanks for posting on your results so far. The BT has always been a sore spot for phones Ive used and internet sharing. Ya its bit of a drain, but anyone surfing internet with backlight going should prob expect this. Besides that though, I've been sailing smooth so far using it occasionally since posting.

Any EE users that give it a go, please comment as well. Feedback is always appreciated after the plunge is taken for those too worried.

Hey just a quick update on this,

I have used this on my GF's PE and ON my EE. I used it for about a month and then i ended up getting a ATT MIFI so I have not used it since.

It worked great on both devices.

It did not work on my nook color however. But the mifi takes care of that.

I think this software has a limited life left as more and more new phones are capable of tethering in infrastructure mode. That is ofcourse figuring that everyone updates their phones every 2 years like they should(IMO).

Thank you so much for your input on how using the program hasn't caused you any problems while you used it. Especially the fact it works on EE just as easily.

For anyone that would like another option to this program(as msavides is right on how long the program will be neccessary), another user has reported on changing the wpa supplicant file. It's testing is shortlived, but so far he is successfull in connecting to Adhoc without a program like this.

Option 2, No Install

Help! I tried the above for trying to tether my PE, and now I not only can't get tethering to work, my PE doesn't recognize my home wireless network. Any suggestions as to how to get my wifi back would be greatly appreciated.

You probably need to run ZT adhoc switcher and switch back to infrastructure mode.

I would also suggest you use the patched wpa_supplicant instead of zt switcher method of getting adhoc working. The advantage is that you do not have to manually switch between adhoc/infrastructure and the adhoc networks show up in the regular list of available networks. It is much more convenient.
