Borders.com Closing

I didn't really see this mentioned (or maybe it was and I missed it?) but, as was more or less expected, the Borders.com portal will be shutting down soon.

Apparently, the library can still be browsed until October 14, and any orders placed will be processed by Barnes & Noble.

I'm not sure whether this means B&N has bought over the rights to the portal, or perhaps even the 'brand'? But even the Borders logo now carries beneath it the line, "Now Fulfilled by Barnes & Noble".

BN has bought the Borders customer lists, at least, because BN has been sending out e-mails to Borders customers about their data being transferred to BN unless they opt out.

I hate to see a competitor die off, but Borders really was the worst bookstore in existence.

B&N bought all of Borders' so-called "intellectual property," which included customer lists, trademark, domain name, and the like. It's somewhat like what Systemax (which is behind Tigerdirect) did with Circuit City and Compusa. You can still buy from the websites of those two defunct businesses, but it's just window dressing for Systemax. Pretty much the same merchandise shuffled around in the form of different sales in each place.

My Borders library was merged with my Kobo library. I just looked for my email confirmation and it was on 8-21. I guess they were doing it differently then. I think I merged them from borders.com.

Yeah, I got some credit cards for my 60-70 dollars of rebates Comp USA owed me, from somebody to use but the dates on the cards were already out of date and you had to use them with other purchases. I just "dropped them in the dirt and moved on."

Probably they were worth something, but the bad taste in my mouth was too much.

You know, I used to tell my wife, at the time, (flavor of the month you know) that Comp USA was my favorite store besides the guns and hunting store (which I really didn't need anything from except ammo refreshment).

She would go shop at some stores in the Mall where Comp USA was after dropping me off and then later come back and dig me out. Those were good days. Then Circuit City dropped out. It is a desert out there now.

Thank Heaven for Amazon our friend!

I loved Borders when I was in the U.S. as a bricks and mortar book store, but when I moved to Australia - forget it. Way too expensive here. But then again so are Angus and Robertson.

I'd shop at Borders if it was called Angus and Robertson.

And both have now gone in Australia, effectively. At least a lot of the better Angus and Robertson franchises have managed to turn independent. I only have one borders ebook on the ipad and as I don't intend to read it again, I haven't been following too closely what happened to their ebooks in Aus. I got badly burned holding $200 of suddenly worthless Borders gift vouchers to ever want to have anything to do with them again even if they are still going.

Well, hopefully B&N can do something to keep those customers. That'd be good for them.

i never liked b&n because they never bothered to put in a dedicated horror section nor bothered to carry many publishers that borders carried. small presses had a much easier time getting into borders.
