Freescale shows off the capability of its new Eink Paltform with video

the whole video is being run on an Eink display. Its quite impressive especially where they show a person holding another device playing video

yeah its grainy but new eink film will greatly reduce that

Nice performance, but I got a nervous flutter in my stomach when "advertising" came up as an important use for this feature. Just what we need: the obligatory 30 second FBI pirating message followed by 15 minutes of previews before we get to start a book.

Very cool. You know, it reminds me of very early motion pictures. We're seeing this baby technology gradually develop. First with extremely slow single-image rendering, then with color, now with scratchy motion. It's really like watching the development of film, but it's happening over such a short space of time. Just goes to show how much faster the world is moving.

And rkomar, I'm with you. It made me especially nervous that this was the first thing he mentioned. Seriously, they make motion-rendering e-ink screens and the first thing they think is "advertising?" That's a bit worrying...

I suppose the draw is low power consumption? As framerates improve will the devices still last a "month" before recharge?

and the power required is not cheap on e-ink.

I imagine, though, that this will be tremendous applications in places where daylight-readable video is needed. Advertising screens, and so on.

large area advertising. think poster size mall displays.

I think the best things this would be for are a visually appealing GUI and web surfing.

Though, I have to wonder. Why use this over the upcoming Liquavista or Mirasol technologies?
