If I like 19th century fiction...
...what more modern writers might I like? I'm very fond of Dickens, Trollope and Austen. I already read Patrick O'Brian and PG Wodehouse regularly; any other idears? I'm also very open to other 19th century writers who may be overlooked.

You can find a better collection (in my opinion) of Sherlock Holmes' stories right here on MobileRead - and it's free!

I adore Trollope's novels, too.
Have you read William Makepeace Thackeray's "Vanity Fair"? Becky Sharpe is a marvelous character. |

I have not read "Vanity Fair." I'll put it on the list.
I have read Doyle, but it'll be a pleasure to read again and I haven't read all of the Holmes stories. With the BBC's Sherlock reboot (which I enjoy hugely) series 2 coming up, it'd be a good idear, even though they have little bearing one on the other. ETA: Thanks! |

Might I suggest Balzac? Jules Verne? H. G. Wells?
There are so many styles (and contents) of 20th century fiction, it's hard to suggest without know more of your taste. For fantasy, I might recommend James Branch Cabell (AKA Branch Cabell). American Western fiction - Zane Grey. There H.P Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith for horror. You might look up Raymond Chandler for Hard Boiled Detective fiction. |

I like social commentary, comedies, fantasy, ripping yarns (to a degree), domestics. My fave 19th century writers are Trollope, Dickens, Austen and Alcott; I've dipped a toe in Gaskill and Hardy and intend to dip further.
![]() I dislike horror, though I've absorbed enough Lovecraft over the years to get all the jokes. "A Shoggoth on the Roof," forsooth! I've read Verne and Wells extensively, though mostly as a girl. I have not read Balzac. I've attempted the Russians but was beaten back at St Petersburg. ![]() |

I had to read your post carefully to see if there was some additional restriction yus wished to apply, but I do not see it. The 19th century includes so many writers not mentioned: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allen Poe, Herman Melville, Mark Twain,Louisa May Alcott, James Fenimore Cooper, Turgenev, Dostoyevsky, Gogol, Tolstoy, . .
I may be back with more later. ![]() |

Hamlet: I've reread the first few pages of "Moby Dick" in the last couple of years, was thoroughly impressed (bad high school memories obscured the writing) and keep intending to pick it back up. Cooper didn't do much for me. Hawthorne I've read some of, will have to go back and read more. Read a lot of Poe but it was years ago. I've read more Alcott than I can list.

Have you heard of Wilkie Collins. He was a friend of Dickens. His book "The Lady in White" was the single biggest best-seller of the nineteenth century. Today, he is mostly overlooked, though I love his stuff.
