why upgrade?
I just got my PE, and so far I am very happy with it. Normally, when I get a new device, I will upgrade immediately to the latest OS version. After seeing the "brick" warnings, I'm (understandably) cautious.
So I have to ask, what are the advantages of upgrading? |

I agree. I just got my PE a few days ago--its in Dingo, and I really like it, for what it is. Sure, its not perfect, its a little buggy, but is is such a unique little device, I'd hate to spoil it by installing an ungrade that perhaps I don't need, and having the machine turn into a plastic thing with 2 screens that can't do anything....

All I can say is the PE's operability improves immensely after the upgrade to 2.2. The interface is better and the added features are worth the effort. I have also heard about the brick problem and the WSOD, but they both seem to be hardware related. If your PE is not exhibiting signs of over-heating, I think you are probably not going to face either of these two problems. I have been at 2.2 for about 4 months and love it...
I have two more PEs coming and both will be upgraded to 2.2 as soon as they get here.... Good luck |

I probably wouldn't have tried it without such a supportive forum. I'd actually resolved to not do it while waiting for my Edge to get here.

I agree with Gerrye. The majority of users reporting problems as a result of the upgrade are most likely because of inferior hardware components. Let's not forget these things are massed produce so there are going to be failures.
I personally own 2 PEs (my son has one) and an EE and all three are upgraded to Ermine. On the PE the upgrade is flawless. I have not had any major problems with the upgrade. I upgraded both PEs on day 1 which has been almost 6 months ago. On my EE the only problem I have had is an occasional stock browser crash. I primarily use xScope anyway and it hasn't crashed on me once. I haven't experienced the hibernation lockup some other full-size eDGE owners have. The advantages to upgrade in my opinion are a much nicer interface, improved speed and functionality of the device, the ability to put the eDGE into hibernate, better handwriting recognition, access to the Amazon App market, and the ability to run most Apps designed for Android 2.2 and above. |

Is there any way to tell if the hardware will be able to handle the upgrade before attempting it? I don't think mine has an over heating problem, but I guesss I would know it if it did?

The decision to upgrade ultimately rests with the user. However, I can assure you that there are thousands of users who have upgraded with no problems. Besides, think about this. Extensive testing is usually done by any company before it releases a firmware upgrade to the general public. No company that is looking to stay in business is going to release a firmware upgrade designed to destroy their product. Usually, as in the case of Entourage, it's not the technical folks that destroy the company. Last edited by obsessed2; 09-25-2011 at 12:32 PM. |

Just a question: I think I had the Amazon Appstore running fine on my PE before I upgraded. Obsessed, you say the upgrade is needed to get the store. Can anyone confirm either way??
Taz, you just have to decide whether to take that (small) risk or not. Some people have chosen "not" and are perfectly happy. Other people (me) put it off for as long as they can and then, after careful study, close the old eyes and bite the old bullet and give it a go. Still others dive right in!! ![]() ![]() Last edited by Filark; 09-26-2011 at 04:24 PM. |

As I use my Pocket Edge for mostly editing text in the reader, I can't help but wonder if there is a difference when writing with the stylus. If the stylus accuraccy improves on the reader eInk side, then I could definitly see moving to Ermine. Is there a big difference there, or is it the same?
Also, does upgrading mean having to reinstall my apps? Thanks, Tunney |

I downloaded the AppStore yesterday on my not-upgraded PE and it works fine...

Cool. And Gunner got it to work on Dingo 1.3. Thanks for the information, I stand corrected.
