reading list and updated tags

hi folks,

i'm using the reading list plugin to watch to see if my books are updated, and if so, then sync them to the device (sony prs-650) again.

I just updated all the tags of my books to include just 5 tags or so in total. I want to use sony's "collections" to manage my library, and it was out of control, with over 100 different tags for just 20 books or so.

I updated all the tags and "synced" everything using reading list (and all the books on the device are in the default reading list). However, the device still shows over 100 collections. Will reading list not update a book on the device if just the book's tags are updated? Or, might something else be going on here that I'm not aware of?

thanks!

Check your settings under
Calibre-Preferences-Sending books to devices-Metadata management

You probably want to set that to "Automatic" (the downside is if you have a lot of books on your Sony it'll take 1-2 minutes each time you connect)

It will then update the tags/collections each time you connect -- the reading list doesn't enter into it at all.

-or-

You can set Metadata management to "Only on send"
Then you'll need to tell the reading list to re-send the books even if they're already on the reader (by customizing the reading list to "Sync all list items to device"), but that will be much slower as it will send the entire book, not just the metadata.

@Manichean: Why moved to the devices subforum, when I'm trying to get the reading list plugin under calibre to make this happen for me? Regardless, still not sure why 'Devices' would be the right subforum, even if it's not to do with reading list specifically...

@capmn: thanks for the help - got it set up. That'd be a nice feature to have in reading list, i.e. just sync metadata when that's the only thing changed.

It is probably as good a place as any! It is really a question about how calibre interfaces to a Sony device.

When you press the "Sync Now" button in the Reading list plugin all it does is invoke the Calibre built-in "Send to Device" functionality for the books managed by Reading List. It does not have any direct access to the Device files. That is why the settings for the "Send to Device" options under preferences matter.

I may have misread the post, but I was under the impression it fit better in devices.

I agree it is more a Device related question: It appears to be a Sony specific question tied to using a general use Plugin.

So, I did all this, and it seemed to work, but now whenever I sync the reading list, calibre uploads ALL the books in the reading list again. Any idea what's going on?

thanks!

In the reading list plugin, choose the Customize plugin option. Select the list you are using in the dropdown. The sixth line down it says "When syncing this list:" with a dropdown of options. Change this from "sync all list items to device" to "sync new list items to device" and click ok.
