poll: What is the ONE thing that if an ereader has you absolutely will not buy it?
For me (non-techie privacy enthusiast)...
The killer is a combination of 1) must use a computer to download books, and 2) must use a credit card to get credits to spend. Either of these alone is bad enough, but the combination means I won't consider buying it. Kindle: good and maybe now in Canada good Kobo: good and good Nook: ? Sony: bad and bad (live and learn, eh?) ipad: bad (it is a computer) and bad? Last edited by hermes; 07-05-2011 at 06:42 AM. Reason: grammar |

For a dedicated ereader, less than 3 weeks of advertised battery life. I know my battery will never last what it advertises for (since I'll use it more often than their calculations) so I want a big buffer between charges.
Annoying (for me) software. I want things as simple as possible. Yeah, that's 2 things rather than 1 but they go kinda hand in hand. It can last 5 years without needing a charge but if the software frustrates me I wont buy it. It can also have my ideal software but if the battery only lasts a week I'll pass. |

Touchscreen-only paging.
Just. Say. No. I might (slightly) consider a device with attrocius paging button ergonomics but I will never even consider a device without it. (At least, not until MS perfects their eyeball-tracking interface. ![]() |

If the ereader has/had an operating system dependency. Like a reasonable percentage of computer owners I DO NOT have a Windows or Mac, so requiring one of those to perform updates wipes that ereader off my list (think Sony, think Kobo with the first firmware update).

Physical keyboard is a killer for me -- I feel like it's a waste of space for my needs.
Lackluster PDF support is also an issue... about half my library is PDFs. |

Too many bells and whistles. I like things to be simple and stay simple.

LCD screen
A device that isn't mostly screen, i.e., using part of the device for a keypad/keyboard A device that won't let me easily read library downloads, which are approx. 90% of all the books I read. Last edited by mbelec; 07-05-2011 at 08:58 AM. Reason: typo |

If it is proprietary and REQUIRES you to buy from THEIR store ONLY, I won't touch it. I don't like being forced to do things other people's way.
After thought: No SD card slot is definitely a killer for me. Last edited by AJ Starr; 07-05-2011 at 09:19 AM. Reason: Add the after thought |

1. A backlit LCD screen.
2. No collections support As long as it's e-ink and handles collections in some way other than listing based on date, author or title, I'm happy with it. |
