BookCrossing.com
Has anyone heard or used this site? The concept is that you release your books 'out' into the wild and then you are able to track who has found them and reading them. Just wondered if anyone had done this before? It seems like a really interesting concept to keep books moving around, and I guess it creates discussion like we have in these forums.
Do you think you would pick up and read a book if you found it on a park bench? And would you then take the time to logon to the website to put your comments up and then pass it on? |

I did some of my books back in the time period when I was converting from paper to digital and clearing shelves and boxes like mad. I bet I dumped about 20 books out in the wild and I never received a notification on any of them.
But ... I'd basically give them to my kid to take up to Metra the days he was commuting into the city with instructions to leave them somewhere public on a bench or something. He got kind of tired of doing that for me. Hopefully somebody who at least enjoyed them picked them up and then didn't just end up in the trash. |

Same here. I released four *really good* books, and never heard a peep. Great idea, but nobody seems to care.

I would only pick one up if it was something I was interested in reading, and the chances of that happening at random are pretty remote. I think these days it would mostly be people picking them up to sell on Ebay.

I released four books...only one turned up, after I'd given up, about five years later. Oddly, it turned up, registered as such, at the hands of a secondhand bookstore, which I thought was nice of them.

I had been fairly active in the past, now not nearly so much. Most of the "catches" and entries have been from books swapped among other Bookcrossers, although there have been a few, rare entries by "outsiders" as well.

I released a couple of books several years ago and just checked to find no news on their status. One was a bike travel book involving train travel and I left it in a train station to continue that journey. Seemed like a good idea at the time. I think there would need to be a lot more activity to have a noticeable impact on readers. I do like the loan/release idea for some books but can't figure out how to do it with my kindle just yet...
