All Stainless Steel?
Hey everyone,
I have some unusual health problems that cause issues with certain chemicals such as new plastic and anything rubber, including the "grippy" backing of the Kindle. I just got a PB 360+ but am having more difficulty with it than I anticipated. Are there any all-metal ereaders out there, or close to it? It appears to me that possibly one of the Sony models would be my best bet? Any suggestions welcome. |

The current Sonys are aluminum. But you better snatch one up because the new fall model just announced is going to be plastic. I don't know of any other metal reader.
I'm not sure if your health issue is with touch or with off-gassing but if it's with touch, have you thought about a case? There are various cases for various readers available, including fabric and leather. If you don't find a lot of options for the pocketbook, check etsy.com where someone might make a case specifically for your reader. eP |

There is some plastic on the Sony Prs 50s (sides & top). So if touching plastic is a problem the top where the slider switch is plastic & you would be touching plastic to turn it on from sleep or to put it to sleep.
I don't know of any readers all metal. Hopefully someone else may. |

Would a case solve the problem? If the Kindle you own was in a case and you were not contacting the material then would you still have problems?

Great info, thanks everyone.
Aluminum - my mistake. I saw a silver-colored metal and assumed. :P The problem is with off-gassing rather than touch, except in rare cases. A case might help a bit - unfortunately I cannot tolerate the materials standard cases are made from, with the possible exception if silicone. The hard screen covering is one thing that made the PB 360+ so attractive to me. Is it just the +50 line, or do Sony's earlier models have similar hardware? |

The 300/600/350/650 Sonys all have mostly metal hardware. A tighter fitting silicone case would prevent most of the plastic issues on those models (if they even make cases like that!)
If you've used silicone cases on other plastic electronics and have had good results, it may be something worth looking into. Metal on consumer electronics seems to be disappearing. |

I think the rear of the 650 may be plastic. I have one here and I'm not sure! The 350 definately has plastic round the edges, while 650 has metal.
You're best bet might be an old 505. Don't touch the 600 as it has a fuzzy screen. |

Did you find a reader or does the problem exist? (Have some experience in handcrafted mold building) |
