I am the very happy owner of a PRS-650 and see no reason to move to the new unit. But I am delighted to see Sony working hard to be competitive and stay in the market with what I think is the best combination of features available.

I note that the SD card is being replaced with a Micro SD card, and apparently the Sony Memory stick access is history.

I do hope the Sony cases to be offered will be of better quality than that of the Sony case for the PRS-650. Mine is starting to sag a bit. The case for the PRS505 was terrific.

Cheers

Same here. Theres just not much incentive to get T1. Now if they had a harry potter version with ALL the books I may have gotten one for my girlfriend and sold her 650.(she wants the HP books for when they are released) I like the 650. Wifi, 400 ghz more speed and micro card reader are just not enough incentive to upgrade right now.(though I may change my mind by October)

BUT this new version will be great for people who were unable to get the x50's. So Im happy for them to be able to finally purchase one at a good price instead of paying the increasing price for the x50's.

Engadget has a better article which includes the press release. Some of the more interesting tidbits I've bulleted below.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/31/s...inch-e-reader/
  • Library access from the device over WiFi in US/UK/Canada.
  • Web Browser access to download any DRM-free epub you want, from where you want.
  • Six font styles (vague, but seems to hint at font choice on some level), 8 font sizes.
  • Still retains audio playback capability, making this very competitive with the Nook STR if that's your thing.
  • In-Text access to Google and Wikipedia lookups.
  • Translation dictionaries.

Plus the other stuff already mentioned in the thread about the Dutch article.

Now I'm kinda angry I picked up the STR instead of waiting. This device, if the font styles are what I think they are, literally fills the last couple of holes in the feature set from Sony that drove me to the Nook in the first place (Sony's font rendering on the 650 with custom fonts beats the Nook easily enough).

As more comes out about this reader I am starting to like it even more. I may re-consider getting it. We shall see.

I love my 5" 350 and how portable it is for me to take with everytime I walk out the door no matter where I'm headed, and I'm sorry to see they're only selling 6" screens now. I'm also sorry to see full plastic housing instead of the metal front to help keep the screen from flexing and breaking (I would have cracked my screen about 5x by now if it weren't for the metal), but the tradeoff is lower price and less weight, both good things, and I could live with that if I decided to go to a 6".

But I absolutely hate that curved bottom, so much that it will keep me from buying a new Sony and keep happily clutching my 350, and looking for a spare 350 or 650 if I run across a good sale on one.

But for new people buying an ereader for the first time, this looks like a win, but only if Sony decides to actually do some decent marketing and advertising to sell the reader.

I should also mention it depends on the finish of the reader... from some images I've seen elsewhere, it looks like the high gloss finish you see common on HD TVs today. When I was looking for my first reader and tried a Nook, I hated the glossy white finish on it. While reading I constantly kept trying to tilt the reader to stop that glare. My eyes are really sensitive to light though, maybe that's not a big issue for others, but for me, it's a deal breaker as is the curved bottom.

Wow, it's price competitive - $149. Unbelievable . I think the killer feature is actually its weight - 168 grams. All the other ereaders are 200 grams or more. If you're holding it for hours, any weight reduction is multiplied by felt.

The ability to change font type and size alone make me want this. It will nicely complement my 5" and 7" SONY readers...

Gaahhh... Why does it have to be so cheap!? I should have waited and kept my 600 for another few months and then went straight to this one, instead of getting a 650. That said I do love my 650 and I've never wanted or needed WiFi capability so I think I'm gonna skip the T1.

I stumbled across a similar article just before I saw this thread from Cnet. The article I found was on Sony's Facebook link pointing to their Sony Select site.

http://news.sel.sony.com/en/press_ro...ase/60688.html

Though I am EXTREMELY happy with my 650, I do want to look at the T-1 and see how nice are the new features. In this house, we seem to be collecting a small library shelf of e-reader devices. Is this library of the future?

As much as I like my new Story HD, I really wish that I had held off for the new Sony. I wanted a new Sony, but usually the new model prices are $200+, so I went in a different direction. I like the new features for the T1, especially the multiple dictionaries.

Are the multiple dictionaries a new feature?

What does "library access" mean?

Checking out and downloading library eBooks from the device itself. Which is one of those big convenience features that you'd expect would be included with Wifi, but nobody else has announced (beyond maybe Amazon).

So I can check out an ePub from my county library system, read it, and ideally, return it all from the device without bringing a PC into it.

We don't know if you can return early from the T1.

Hence the phrase: "and ideally, return it".
