Dictionary now takes extra screen touch

I'm all in favour of adding new features to the Kobo Touch, and the "Translate" feature is a nice one, but it should be its own separate button on the bottom of the screen. I look up words in the dictionary all the time; I almost never need to translate one. But now the action for looking up has gone from one press to two, because you have to choose every time between "Define" and "Translate." Ugh.

Yes. I use dictionary all the time. Never use translate.

I really don't follow you on this, does it really mater that it takes you a half second more to get a definition? If this bugs you I would post it in the "Future Firmware Request" sticky thread.

This definitely bothers me as well. Not sure why they couldn't make two separate icons for the dictionary and the translator, or include translator with the other options, since I would assume most people rarely, if ever, use the function.

I am going to disagree. It is one extra click/touch. I prefer to have fewer icons and have the extra menu. I also rarely use either feature, so having them tucked away under one item makes sense to me.

I agree with you.

Moreover there'd better be a choice in the "advanced configuration" menu: go to dictionary directly when i hold on a word. Save even more works!

For those to whom English is a second language, and reading a difficult novel (think about Joyce), the dictionary is used more than anything else (for reading Joyce, probably native speakers need it as well...).

I wholeheartedly agree on this one!

1.9.10 introduced this extra tap, and it is one annoying tap too much which in fact makes the interface feel clumsy. There is more than enough space for separate, direct-access buttons for "Translate" and "Define". Separate buttons would not make it look cluttered.

I am not a native English speaker, but I read lots of English books, and frequently have to look up verbs and adjectives (for example, Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, which I'm reading now, frequently uses a lot of words I did never read before, or I always read over them). I do never translate words but look up their English definition, so the change was pretty noticeable to me.

I agree with you guys on this. A great way to solve it would be a long press automatically bringing you to the dictionary page with a button below the definition to the translation options. Still the same amount of presses for a person to translate, but less for the more often used dictionary feature.

Also on the long press issue, I have noticed that since the last firmware update that I have to press slightly above a word to get the definition, where as before I found it a pretty accurate touch. Is anyone else noticing this offset?

Exactly the same issue here, it appeared after the update from 1.9.9 to 1.9.10.

I thought it was just me. I was showing the KT to my brother-in-law saying "look how easy this is!", and of course it didn't work

I too don't have a need for translate on a regular basis, and don't like the extra screen touch. I think that it would be more interesting/useful if you could choose which language you wanted to translate to, instead of the default you selected.

Yep I have to press a little above the word to get the definition.
The idea of pressing it long enough and it opens the definition is a good idea if only the finger press was accurate.
Maybe the definition on bottom of the screen with the option to view in total screen would be nice feature (like the kindle dictionary) because I hate having to completely go away from my reading page (I want to reread the passage for the context while reading the definition too)

Is there any way to access the dictionary from the home screen without opening a book? I just wanted to use it to translate a word, but I didn't see the dictionary function on the menus available from the home screen.

Nope. You have to have a book open (though you don't need to highlight a word to define or translate it, fortunately).
