Walking around naked.

So I had a dustjacket on my K2. It kept it looking new but was uber thick. I'm thinking about going naked on my K3. The way I figure it, it's already "free" now and by the time I get rid of it, it probably won't really matter how the case looks. I already have a screen protector on the way. I've seen some people that go caseless on their K3s. Is the K3 really fragile thus making this a bad idea or is it OK to go naked?

I'm with Alan. If you drop a Kindle without a case you're more likely to have it suffer damage than if your Kindle 3 has a case.

I wouldn't take it out the house without a cover. but reading without is OK as long as you don't drop it.

I use my K3 naked all the time. The only time it is in the lighted case is when I need the light or when I travel. I take it with me in the car quite frequently without a case if I'm going some place where I might have to wait (think doctor's office). Just be careful.

I keep my DXG in a folder-type case all the time. I dropped it at the top of the stairs and watched in horror as it tumbled and bounced all the way down. No damage. What condition would it have been in if it had been naked? Probably not good.

Cover up, you know it makes sense.

I store/transport mine in a nylon sleeve case and it's great peace of mind when it comes to what else surrounds it in my bag/luggage/whatever. I do read it caseless though, and this includes on the subway every morning, and I only occasionally bother to put it back in the sleeve when I transfer trains. IMHO, it would be insane not to have something to protect it when you're not reading, but as for reading without a case, probably OK. Just keep your head on straight and don't punt it off the couch while you're sitting there.

One can never say that the Kindle will never be dropped. No way to know for sure. And there's no way to know if it will drop on a hard surface as well.

Going naked is allowing a greater risk of damage. Plus, a lot of people feel that a cover actually makes the K3 easier to hold.

The sleeve may be OK while you travel, but I dare you to take your K3 out of the sleeve and use it on the subway.

I have read of people reading in bed, falling asleep and finding the reader on the floor. Do you want to do that with a naked K3? You may say to yourself it's fine to go naked if I don't do this, that, or the other thing. But there is no way you can be 100% sure you won't do something that will cause your k3 to hit a hard surface.

a coverless eink reader is a really STUPID idea.

My K3 is covered up. I was shopping online for cases tonight and then remembered I had a new Nook case I got for $1 a while back. I remember it didn't fit my K2 but the K3 is smaller. Sure enough, it fits like a glove. It's almost like it was made for it with a proper size cutout for the keyboard. It's a book type case which I prefer.

I'd try that, but the missus always tells me to cover up when we have company.

snort. Or maybe somebody just doesn't like having a cover on their reader. I mean seriously, accidental damage insurance is cheaper than most covers that are sold. Or maybe the user is just like me and knows that if they break it they can just buy another one. I mean, I don't throw $99 away on a regular basis but I could afford to replace my Kindle if I needed to without depriving my children of shoes or vegetables for dinner.
