I've added Mobile Read Forums to my personal list of highly addictive substances. It joins other notable members such as nicotine, caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, and opiates.

I don't post much, but I read a lot of certain sub-forums. Not quite as addictive as cigarettes were, though. Leaves me with better smelling breath.

Yes, pd, I avoided MR for maybe two months max. Until I had a question that was driving me crazy…. Oh, I get it. another snort.

Seriously, when I don't consciously avoid it, MR sucks me in and uses up my time. It's nearly impossible for me to ask, get answered, and leave. What happens is this:

I do a search of MR to find an answer to a question. The search results lead me astray and use up a lot of time if I let them.

So I post a question, usually in a calibre subforum. Getting an answer is of burning importance to me. Of course while sticking around anxiously awaiting an expert's response, I start reading other people's posts, which leads to me posting a response in some of those threads. Now I have enabled myself to wait around for more reasons.

I notice somebody asked a question I actually know the answer to, which happens increasingly frequently as I learn more. And none of the experts has responded yet. And it's been almost an hour. So I respond. Then I second-guess myself and have to research and test things further, and find out I was right or wrong. If right, I feel good and am further enabled. If wrong, I vow to do better in future and try harder, and am further-enabled to spend more time here. In either case, I'd better stick around in case that OP needs some clarification….

Sometimes an expert rewards me with karma. Oh, I love karma!

And then I realize it's been 6 hours since I did anything I had on my list of things-to-do, except maybe get an answer to a question.

It's educational - that's my excuse.

PeterT, asking the admins to suspend addicts is like asking physicians to cure the cause rather than the symptom. If they frequently cure the cause they're out of a job. Admins like karma too!

Indeed, while new to MR myself, the place is dammed addicting. Credit all the interesting, knowledgeable people hanging around here. If not, the place would be a ghost town.
