What is 'ornament assy' ?

I finally got my ereader back from the Sony repair centre yesterday

But I'm curious about the description of the fault, it says Defect - ornament assy (for D - Cut, broken

The repair code was - Replacement

Now, I'm guessing that the 'assy' is 'assembly' but what is an 'ornament assembly' WRT an ereader?

It was sent for repair because none of the buttons & slider switch were working properly but the buttons aren't ornaments - or are they?

I would hazard a guess that it refers to those external "things" - switches, buttons, sliders, etc - which are not a part of the actual case.

Don't forget you are dealing with a Japanese company and everything must be translated into your language, in this case English. As a ham (amateur radio operator) most of my radios are built by Japanese companies (though usually assembled in China). We hams always joke about the difficult to read English versions of the User Guides for these radios. I always tell everyone that they are written in Japanglish--not really English but a very bad translation from Japanese. The really difficult parts of the manuals to interpret are the acronyms which ham radios use a lot. (Due to lack of space, three and four letter acronyms are printed on the radio face next to buttons and dials to indicate their functions.) Since these were originally Japanese language based when they translate them to English (and I assume most other languages) the acronyms make little or no sense. Rather than translate the concept into English then create an acronym from the English words, they create the acronyms from the Japanese words. Long story, but I suspect your receipt for repairs is filled with similar difficult Japanglish terms.

I remember being confused by the term "door furniture" a favourite of builders merchants for doorknobs and the like.

I also remember, in my younger days, the first real sales push by BMW motorcycles.Their bikes arrived with rather interestingly translated instruction manuals, which caused a lot of hilarity in the motorcycle papers of the time - to be echoed when the Japanese invasion vanguard arrived in their crates.

It took a while before they realised a professioal translator might be a good idea !

Assy is a common Engineering abbreviation for Assembly. Someone posted a service manual awhile ago. The ornament assemblies are the strips around the edge of the reader. There appears to be one assembly at the top and one which wraps around the side and bottom as a continuous piece. If you were having trouble with the power slider, then it looks like they repaired or replaced this top assembly.

And road signs, bollards, traffic lights etc. are "street furniture". Makes you wonder who came up with the term.

In the far past, I have been with groups who did dramatic readings from various sports car shop manuals, with the attendant translation errors.

Japanese machines were the best.

We are still trying to find the item mentioned in the instruction that stated, "Gently tease the lotus like nut."
