Different cover between Kobo ePub and Adobe ePub
Hi,
This morning I bought the book "Blue Moon Rising" by Simon R. Green, on the Kobo store. I have bought it through my Kobo, so instant download, the book is fine, with a good cover (title, author, and a dragon picture). Then I went into my Kobo library to download the Adobe DRM version as well, to store it on my computer. But this Adobe DRM version is different, no beautiful cover, no picture on the cover, just the book name and author name, and that's all. How comes? Usually I prefer Adobe ePub or DRM free ePub to put them in Calibre, I use Calibre to manage my library and not the Kobo desktop app, so later if I have another reader I will still have access to my books. I know I can change the cover with Calibre, but then I have to find a good cover for this book, as I doubt I can get the Kobo ePub cover and put it on another book, right? And I doubt it is possible to convert the Kobo ePub to standard ePub? Thanks |

You can save the Kobo cover image and then specify that file when you work with Calibre. You're right, it is not currently possible to do the file conversion.

How can I save the Kobo cover image?
What is strange as well is when I open Kobo desktop it sync my books and put this book in my library, I see on small picture the good book cover, but when I open the book in the Kobo desktop, on the cover page as see the Adobe DRM cover, so just the title and author with no picture. But on my Kobo I see the book with the good cover. But unsure if I delete my book on my Kobo and sync it with the desktop which version I'll have, with or without cover. With Calibre I have found the Amazon cover though, just that the cover size is smaller than the Kobo size. Last edited by Julien Pham; 12-14-2011 at 08:31 AM. |

Right click on the image. Save it to your computer. In Calibre, choose "edit metadata individually". In the change cover section of the resulting screen, choose "browse" and navigate to the place where you saved the file.

But right click on which image? On the Kobo website the cover pictures are small, and on the eBook... how do I right click the picture on the eBook? And in Kobo desktop, this is a flash app, right click does not work.
So where do I right click? ![]() |

The images scale. Note: they may not be perfect.

220x332 the picture on the website once saved on my computer, this is small, the Kobo is 600x800. This is smaller than the Kobo ePub cover

There may be a way to get the cover image that is used for the kepub version but I warn you it is pretty involved.
1. Load the kepub into your Kobo. 2. Connect the Kobo to your computer. 3. Go to the .kobo/images directory and you will find the 4 or 5 (depends) thumbnails that the Kobo has made for the book. It will have a long and involved name but you will see the title in there somewhere. You want the one with Library_Full near the end of the name. It has an extension of .parsed but is simply a JPG file. (note: do NOT change this file. It might screw up your database.) 4. Copy this file to your computer and rename by adding .jpg to the end of the filename. 5. You will now be able to use Calibre to add to your epub. 6. Then delete the kepub from the Kobo. 7. Now add the epub however you normally do. (Calibre or Explorer) See quite simple and easy? If you need any details please PM me. Larry |

Thanks, sounds good to me.
Why should I delete the kepub from the kobo? ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I didn't read your first post carefully enough.
Yes, if you use the Kepubs then this gives you a way to get the cover to Calibre. I don't use them at all. I use magically freed epubs so I can edit them later to correct proofing errors I always find. Larry |

I must be missing something. I can't even locate the kepubs in my Touch directories.

That is likely due to the way they are named. They do not use the book title in the name but a special ID number with no extension.
They are in the .kobo/kepub folder. Larry |
