iPhone Help from anyone in Australia

I'm looking for a bit of advice from anyone in Australia.

I'm visiting Melbourne in a couple of weeks, and I'd like to get some sort of local "pay as you go" internet access for my iPhone while I'm there. Are such things availabe? Any ideas as to prices and where to buy? Just need something that'll be cheaper than paying the data roaming charges from the UK!

How long are you going to be there for and how often are you going to be using mobile internet?

I'm not from Australia but I did some research for my trip down under 2 months ago. Prepaid prices start from $20-30 for 1GB worth (some with expiry date of 30 days), which is not very cheap. Not exactly the best forum for information tbh, maybe try the other travel sites or another part of MR?

I did some research a little while back whilst having issues with my existing Vodafone account.

If you are not straying far from the city, then Virgin offer a good deal. I have two Virgin mobile sims which I use from time to time, which only cost me for the calls I make.

Stay away from Telstra and Optus as they are expensive for what you get.

You could try members Alex Bell (Tasmania) and Meredith Whitford (Adelaide) -- both pals of mine, Harry. If you get stuck, give me a shout and I'll search my author list for someone based in Melbourne who could help. I also have friends in Melbourne (not particularly techie-minded and not members here I could try for you.

Whatever, have a good trip, mate. Wish I could carry your bags for you. Australia's always been top of my to-visit list to see family (near as dammit the entire Welsh side moved to Tasmania in the sixties and seventies), friends, authors, old journo pals from Fleet Street days, etc. But that to-visit list no longer exists since health issues kicked in a decade ago and I can get no farther than the terrace gate. C'est la vie. Still in warm and regular touch with everyone there, though. Bon Voyage, Harry. Have a whale of a time. Neil

I've done a web search and found a company called "amaysim" which seems to offer a good deal (1GB for A$9). I've ordered one of their SIM cards. Thanks for the help, everyone.
