Kindle to IPad?
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could help me. I currently have a kindle which I love reading on and also use the kindle app on my iphone when I am out and about. I am in the market for a tablet (shift in technology going on in the house) and have been looking at the iPad 2. I was looking at smaller tablets as I thought they would be better size and weight wise when using as an ereader but the general functionality and the fact that I know the system so well through the iphone is pushing me towards an iPad. Could anyone tell me if they really notice the iPad being too heavy when used as an ereader or if it really is able to function as something you would take out and about with you every day in your bag to work etc? Thanks for any replies, kelly |

Everyone has their own set of criteria. But for me the iPad has become a tablet that is used primarily around the house and only occasionally when out and about, but rarely for reading. Although it has a wonderful set of apps available for reading, the iPad screen is too low-resolution for my middle-aged eyes. The iPt4 with its Retina display is great, but it is way to small for a fulltime reader. So when I combine the low-resolution screen, lackluster text rendering capability, and bulkiness factors, I find that I cannot rate the iPad as a good reader option. If I was you, I would hold on to my Kindle for a while and first verify if the iPad works for you as a reader. It does seem to be the primary reader for many people, so perhaps it will work for you too.
As a tablet though, I highly rate the iPad. I use it a lot for non-reading purposes and I find that it is more portable than my netbook for when I need to go out. But it is still a luggable device in that it does take up space and it does weigh over a pound. Last edited by jswinden; 07-10-2011 at 12:34 PM. |

I do not find an iPad too low resolution for reading. It is certainly higher than a computer screen at 134 dpi. Perhaps you are making the font size too small. Just increase the font size and you will be fine. My eyes are way older than yours.

I made the switch and will never go back. It took me a bit to get used to reading on the lcd screen but after playing with the brightness I love it... and I can read and play angry birds on the same equipment

I don't have the iPad, but have a Xoom tablet and find I use it for reading around the house, I use my Sony 505 outdoors (sometimes indoors).
I use the Kindle app, Nook App, FBReader and Google Books reader. I love it. |

Thanks for the replies. I've actually been looking at the Samsung Galaxy Tablet as well since I posted this. Wondering if maybe I should try something different to Apple as I already have the iphone. I'm off to the shops to have a look at them today although I won't be able to afford anything until Septemberish

As you can see by looking at my devices, I have a variety of them. The iPad 2 is the latest and it's what I use the most for reading. I'm retired now so I'm home most of the time but do take it out occasionally.
My first "Tablet" is the rooted NookColor. Once rooted it makes a reasonably good tablet but is really too small for internet use. I had an android 10.1" tablet (a NotionInk Adam) but was disappointed with it. I sold it and "dubiously" bought the iPad. I am definitely NOT an Apple person. However I have been very pleased with my iPad 2 and even prefer the iBook reader SW that comes with it. I use the Landscape orientation set with two pages. That makes books about the same size as a paperback book but with adjustable font size. For me, the main drawback is that I have to remember to charge it 'every' night. I read enough that I get eye strain by the end of the day (even with eink display). I don't notice any significant difference between paper print, eink & LCD (on the iPad) as far as eye strain is concerned. Bottom line is if you have a wireless network where you'll be reading, I'd highly recommend the iPad 2. |

I LOVE, love, love my Kindle. For heavy duty reading (>1hour) I read on the Kindle. Having said that, I LOVE my iPad2 although I definitely don't use it for long term reading.
For me, the backlight after about an hour tires my eyes. Not saying this happens for everyone, but it definitely does for me. My eyes are overly sensitive to light since Lasik. I have heard of people using the iPad as their primary device for reading and having no issues where this is concerned. The other factor that prevents the iPad from being my e-reader is simply its weight. It is a bit too heavy to hold for long stretches of reading. The Kindle on the other hand is very light. As it has been stated earlier, it is a matter of preference. Good luck with your decision. |

I read on my kindle when the light is good and on my iPad after dark.I have no problems with eyestrain. With the right settings ( font size and screen luminosity the kindle app is as good an ereader as is its hardware brother. If I could only figure out how to make it search a different dictionary,so I can use the dictionary for the language the book I read is written in?!! The only thing I don't like about iPad is its dependence on iTunes v.b.

I wish the iPad was not so heavy, like the Kindle DXG maybe, but I finally opted for selling the Kindle DXG and keep the iPad as my PDF reader. Got tired of waiting for a firmware upgrade and the iPad really shines with PDFs.
Having said that, I still go back and use my Kindle 3 most of the time. iPad 2 is not too heavy, but 7 oz (I think that's Kindle weight) are almost perfect for long reading sessions. I would not rely on my iPad as portable reading device though. I consider myself lucky because I usually read my computer books at home so I have no need to take it out with me. For get aways or vacations, I use my Kindle. |

I personally have chosen the iPad 2 over the Kindle 3, something I never thought I would say. So much so that I am selling my Kindle 3.

my dd has a kindle and I don't find it as being a quality product. l love my Ipad 2 and bring it out as well as use it in the house. I created my own bag for it that has a removable strap so when I bring it out I wear it in its own bag. I don't find it heavy and I find it far superier in quality over any of the other tablets on the market.
